Not what you can see in the look inside

I have sent back the book to Amazon. While you can see color photos in the "look inside" at the Amazon's website, the book comes with tiny black and white photos at very low resolution. Thus, it is impossible for instance, to see the position of the hands in specific techniques. Moreover, although the Korean text is good for those who speak Korean but I find the author should focuse in one language and count on translated editions for other markets. This would reduce notably the size of the book and could include further explanations about each technique, which I also found them very limited.

Great book to use as a technical reference, with technique names in korean and english.

The book gives a pretty good overview over most techniques common to various Hapkido styles, and also adds a bunch of functional ground techniques not commonly taught in Hapkido. As another reviewer commented, the book I received had photos in b/w, instead of in color as seen in the preview, which make it harder to see what's going on in some of the photos. However, as I already know most of the techniques in the book, I will primarily use it as a technical reference, and for that role it's perfect.

Also, as someone else pointed out, the text in the book is in both korean and english, with each technique first described in korean(in hangul nonetheless), and then in english, with the name of most techniques spelled out in korean hangul, romanized hangul and then english. I think this is great, as I finally have learned correct korean names for several of the techniques I have only learned with numbers or names in english or in my native language earlier, and the fact that each technique is also described in korean, makes it much easier to practice them with koreans who may not speak any of the languages I do.

The ground fighting portion of the book seems for the most part to be lifted straight out of BJJ (including the names of the techniques, such as butterfly guard, americana, omoplata, etc.). That said, the ground techniques presented is all good, practical and mostly basic BJJ of white and blue belt level, and should complement traditional hapkido practitioners game well.

All in all a very good book, but i can imagine that the fact that the photos i B/W can be a turnoff for some people, especially since all the techniques is demonstrated by two people both wearing white doboks/gis against a gray background.

printing issues, great content

This is a good book for the topic. Newman has a tendency to get a bit too detailed in places for fundamentals and talks ahead of himself in some chapters (although with processes as interconnected as ecotoxicology it would be hard not too. But it presents the major ideas of ecotoxicology in decent detail and decent length; any other ecotoxicology book out there is 5x thicker. It is a manageable read and explains the major toxins well for people not majoring in chemistry or physiology, and illustrates ideas with case studies and vignettes that are very interesting. The way the book is printed is a bit odd, it is on the lower quality paper produced in textbooks nowdays and the pictures are in grayscale; but the case study boxes are printed in blue, which makes them kind of hard to read. I would rather have grayscale boxes and color photos. The book printers also take the opportunity to use lesser quality paper and printing methods without lowering the price of the book. But the book itself is a good addition to the library of a natural sciences student, and increasingly important with today's use of chemicals we don't really understand. The third edition has several additions and improvements over the second edition.

Hoping for Marcus to continue the tale...

This was one of those series I didn't want to end and got melancholy as.the last book was getting close to ending as I knew I would have to bid farewell to some old, very human friends that Kelso had woven. An engaging, enjoyable read that transports the reader back to a different time and place through the (third person) eyes of not as average as he seems 'regular Joe'. Highly recommend to fans of the genre.

This is an eye opening book for both educators and students alike. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in education, specially mobile education(mLearning). We all know how technology has contributed to the evolution of learning methods in academia. The access to knowledge is no longer inaccessible based on constraints location or social status and is available to anyone and everyone beyond limitations. The use of computer, iphones and other devices allowed information to reach beyond the historically privileged class. In what her preface describes as "this scrapbook, this witness of the black experience in miniature," Bolden (The Book of African-American Women) presents a pastiche of visuals and narratives spotlighting American children of African descent, from colonial times to the present. An abundance of period photographs, paintings, drawings and handsomely set-off extracts from memoirs, letters and journals create the appearance of a scrapbook or album; more importantly, they allow readers to immerse themselves directly in the historical past. An 1861 photograph of children outside an orphanage in New York City, for example, adds immediacy to the accompanying information that the orphanage was looted and set on fire during the Draft Riots of 1863. The first-hand accounts are often heartrending: in an 1868 letter to a Sunday school class in the North, a seven-year-old from Alabama whose mother has died and whose father "went off with the Yankees" writes, "Perhaps I shall get on the cars some time and come to see you. Would you speak to a black boy?" Bolden's overview meanders at times, but it is filled with intriguing, little-known facts, e.g., in March 1955, nine months before Rosa Parks touched off the Montgomery bus boycott by refusing to surrender her bus seat to a white passenger, 15-year-old Claudette Colvin of Birmingham, Ala., was arrested for the same offense. This impressively researched, imaginatively presented history evokes deep appreciation for the struggles, perseverance and triumphs of young black Americans. Ages 9-12.

Can't recommend it highly enough!

Imagine a scrapbook compiled collectively and intimately by African Americans from the first recorded birth of a black child in Jamestown, through the Revolution, Civil War, Reconstruction and right up to our own time, amply illustrated with compelling images, literature, personal recollections, art works, cartoons and ephemera, and you might begin to picture this book. It's impossible to describe fully...you really have to experience it. I can't recommend this book highly enough...there's something new and amazing to be found on every page!

This wonderful book recognizes and reinforces the tremendous diversity among African-American families, in cultural attitudes, in material wealth, in hometraining, and in every aspect of American life.

Page after page offers excerpts from scrapbooks, letters, and journals telling of life's struggles, yes, but also life's triumphs, aspirations, and observations. Very wonderful emphasis on education, education, education, and hometraining.

I consider hometraining to be hands-on learning, generation-to-generation, of mindfulness, manners, duty, self-respect, and an awareness of one's own potential.

I've had people talk to me about homeschooling. In my opinion, every parent had better be hometraining.

A good place to start? Start where Frederick Douglass started -- with "The Columbian Orator." The Columbian Orator: Containing a Variety of Original and Selected Pieces; Together with Rules; Calculated to Improve Youth and Others in the Ornamental and Useful Art of Eloquence

I gave this rating because it is well worth it and then some.I love the way that the Lord uses this Man of God to profoundly lay out the points through diligently studying the Word and playfully compiling this anointed work. I've had this book for some time now. Originally purchased from Barnes and noble for my Nook. It's a must for all God fearing and loving parents that are really serious about the overall health and well-being of our children. I highly recommend it to teachers and Christian counselors who are truly serious about the Will of God concerning the destiny of the children God has entrusted to our care. A great and practical book with anointed ideas and Kingdom Principles, I can hardly wait for volume two.
