"Katniss Everdeen, you have competition."—Entertainment Weekly
The thrilling conclusion to the New York Times bestselling Tearling trilogy.
In less than a year, Kelsea Glynn has transformed from a gawky teenager into a powerful monarch. As she has come into her own as the Queen of the Tearling, the headstrong, visionary leader has also transformed her realm. In her quest to end corruption and restore justice, she has made many enemies—including the evil Red Queen, her fiercest rival, who has set her armies against the Tear.
To protect her people from a devastating invasion, Kelsea did the unthinkable—she gave herself and her magical sapphires to her enemy—and named the Mace, the trusted head of her personal guards, regent in her place. But the Mace will not rest until he and his men rescue their sovereign, imprisoned in Mortmesne.
Now, as the suspenseful endgame begins, the fate of Queen Kelsea—and the Tearling itself—will finally be revealed.

Review
“Kelsea flourishes alongside the other female characters at the center of the novel: These are powerful, determined women who work hard to accomplish their goals even as their mistakes haunt them. Johansen doesn’t punish them for these mistakes; she allows them to grow, leading to a well-earned ending.” (Washington Post)
“Johansen has consistently taken huge narrative risks with this series. . . . With richly developed characters who are never boring black and white, and villains who are as fascinating as the heroes, the finale of this outstanding series will be talked about by readers.” (Library Journal, Pick of the Month)
“Johansen’s vision—a society tearing itself apart amid the effort to redefine itself—is ambitious, and the conflict is fleshed out through myriad character arcs. . . . wraps up the story quite nicely.” (Publishers Weekly)
“Excellent.” (Entertainment Weekly, “Must List”

A disappointment
By NeonElephant
I'm unsure if I can adequately express how much I loved the first two books in this series. Not only were they creative and exciting, but they were also unique and well written. The first two books were so completely amazing that the idea of waiting over a year for the final installment in the series was both agonizing and unbearable. That being said, this book was a complete and utter disappointment.
Not only did we have new characters added to the story, but several characters from the first two books were completely abandoned and their stories were unfinished and incomplete. And even though abandoning those characters completely blows, some transformed into drastically different people that were in no way familiar to the ones we had seen from the first two books.
If that wasn’t enough, the book was also extremely long and drawn out. Not only were the first 250 pages unnecessary, but the ending came completely out of left field and felt rushed and unrealistic.
I could go on and list the rest of my grievances, but what would be the point? The book has already been published and I don’t have a magical crown that will allow me to travel back in time and fix it.

*SPOILERS* A bland, confusing end to a promising series.
By Sara Parks
*Spoilers ahead*
As in 'Invasion', 'Fate' is at its engrossing, page-turning best when Johansen focuses on Kelsea and the Tearling of the "present". Less interesting are the chapters set in the dystopian past of the early days of the Tearling, with Katie being an even less interesting character than the second volume's Lily. Few of the characters in these chapters are developed beyond a one-note "good versus evil" sort of presentation. The more nuanced Tearling chapters are far more exciting and you'll find yourself longing for them, especially when the "past" chapters begin to drag into longer and longer passages.
The majority of the book is still quite the page-turner, and the chapters focusing on the Red Queen and Kelsea's captivity are some of the best in the series. By the end though, Johansen has written Kelsea into such a complicated situation that one can hardly imagine how she'll save the day and bring about the Tearling future hinted at by the scholars at the beginning of each chapter! Wait, nope, nope... Kelsea changes the past. You know, just crawls out of the body of her ancestress and kills Row before he can create his army of Zompires, which erases the entire timeline and brings about Tear's utopia in which everyone she ever knew SOMEHOW still exists. Because that whole butterfly effect conversation? Apparently doesn't apply to people! The logic is mind boggling... and it creates an anti-climactic, banal, and tragically inane endings to a complex fantasy world. WHY Johansen, WHY?

Kind of a let down
By Amazon Customer
I really enjoyed the first two books. They sucked you in and you really bonded with the characters. This book, not so much. New characters were introduced and old ones left by the wayside. It was very repetitive on certain points as,well. It felt as if there should have been a novella in between the books instead of EVERYTHING being crammed into one. I didn't feel as though all the characters had their story lines completed. It felt unfinished and left me shaking my head at the end of it all. I wish she would have split this into 2 books.
