"Katniss Everdeen, you have competition."—Entertainment Weekly

The thrilling conclusion to the New York Times bestselling Tearling trilogy.

In less than a year, Kelsea Glynn has transformed from a gawky teenager into a powerful monarch. As she has come into her own as the Queen of the Tearling, the headstrong, visionary leader has also transformed her realm. In her quest to end corruption and restore justice, she has made many enemies—including the evil Red Queen, her fiercest rival, who has set her armies against the Tear.

To protect her people from a devastating invasion, Kelsea did the unthinkable—she gave herself and her magical sapphires to her enemy—and named the Mace, the trusted head of her personal guards, regent in her place. But the Mace will not rest until he and his men rescue their sovereign, imprisoned in Mortmesne.

Now, as the suspenseful endgame begins, the fate of Queen Kelsea—and the Tearling itself—will finally be revealed.

Review
“Kelsea flourishes alongside the other female characters at the center of the novel: These are powerful, determined women who work hard to accomplish their goals even as their mistakes haunt them. Johansen doesn’t punish them for these mistakes; she allows them to grow, leading to a well-earned ending.” (Washington Post)

“Johansen has consistently taken huge narrative risks with this series. . . . With richly developed characters who are never boring black and white, and villains who are as fascinating as the heroes, the finale of this outstanding series will be talked about by readers.” (Library Journal, Pick of the Month)

“Johansen’s vision—a society tearing itself apart amid the effort to redefine itself—is ambitious, and the conflict is fleshed out through myriad character arcs. . . . wraps up the story quite nicely.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Excellent.” (Entertainment Weekly, “Must List”

A disappointment
By NeonElephant
I'm unsure if I can adequately express how much I loved the first two books in this series. Not only were they creative and exciting, but they were also unique and well written. The first two books were so completely amazing that the idea of waiting over a year for the final installment in the series was both agonizing and unbearable. That being said, this book was a complete and utter disappointment.

Not only did we have new characters added to the story, but several characters from the first two books were completely abandoned and their stories were unfinished and incomplete. And even though abandoning those characters completely blows, some transformed into drastically different people that were in no way familiar to the ones we had seen from the first two books.

If that wasn’t enough, the book was also extremely long and drawn out. Not only were the first 250 pages unnecessary, but the ending came completely out of left field and felt rushed and unrealistic.

I could go on and list the rest of my grievances, but what would be the point? The book has already been published and I don’t have a magical crown that will allow me to travel back in time and fix it.

*SPOILERS* A bland, confusing end to a promising series.
By Sara Parks
*Spoilers ahead*
As in 'Invasion', 'Fate' is at its engrossing, page-turning best when Johansen focuses on Kelsea and the Tearling of the "present". Less interesting are the chapters set in the dystopian past of the early days of the Tearling, with Katie being an even less interesting character than the second volume's Lily. Few of the characters in these chapters are developed beyond a one-note "good versus evil" sort of presentation. The more nuanced Tearling chapters are far more exciting and you'll find yourself longing for them, especially when the "past" chapters begin to drag into longer and longer passages.
The majority of the book is still quite the page-turner, and the chapters focusing on the Red Queen and Kelsea's captivity are some of the best in the series. By the end though, Johansen has written Kelsea into such a complicated situation that one can hardly imagine how she'll save the day and bring about the Tearling future hinted at by the scholars at the beginning of each chapter! Wait, nope, nope... Kelsea changes the past. You know, just crawls out of the body of her ancestress and kills Row before he can create his army of Zompires, which erases the entire timeline and brings about Tear's utopia in which everyone she ever knew SOMEHOW still exists. Because that whole butterfly effect conversation? Apparently doesn't apply to people! The logic is mind boggling... and it creates an anti-climactic, banal, and tragically inane endings to a complex fantasy world. WHY Johansen, WHY?

Kind of a let down
By Amazon Customer
I really enjoyed the first two books. They sucked you in and you really bonded with the characters. This book, not so much. New characters were introduced and old ones left by the wayside. It was very repetitive on certain points as,well. It felt as if there should have been a novella in between the books instead of EVERYTHING being crammed into one. I didn't feel as though all the characters had their story lines completed. It felt unfinished and left me shaking my head at the end of it all. I wish she would have split this into 2 books.

Analysing Freud...
By FrKurt Messick
Pamela Thurschwell's text on Sigmund Freud is part of a recent series put out by the Routledge Press, designed under the general editorial direction of Robert Eaglestone (Royal Holloway, University of London), to explore the most recent and exciting ideas in intellectual development during the past century or so. To this end, figures such as Martin Heidegger, Jacques Derrida, Friedrich Nietzsche, Paul Ricoeur, and other influential thinkers in critical thought are highlighted in the series, planned to include at least 21 volumes in all.
Thurschwell's text, following the pattern of the others, includes background information on Freud and its significance, the key ideas and sources, and Freud's continuing impact on other thinkers. As the series preface indicates, no critical thinker arises in a vacuum, so the context, influences and broader cultural environment are all important as a part of the study, something with which Freud might agree.
Why is Freud included in this series? It is hard to come up with a more controversial and influential thinker in the twentieth century than Sigmund Freud. His name has become a household word by those who know absolute nothing about him or his real work. While starting out in the then newly-developed field of psychology as a primary focus, his thought and intellectual influence has extended far beyond to almost every academic field. Particularly in the areas of philosophy, politics, theology, sociology, and science, Freud's influence will continue to be significant for a number of reasons.
Thurschwell's text is well organised. In the first chapter, she recounts both a brief biographical sketch of Freud, as well as the discussion on how Freud's development of psychoanalytic ideas and processes impacted the intellectual development of the early twentieth century. It is important to know which time-period of Freud his works were produced - a career in such a new field that extended for such a length of time means that Freud's ideas not only developed rapidly, but sometimes came to contradict each other. Thurschwell sees this kind of development as a strength rather than a weakness, but it does call for increased care on the part of scholars and other interpreters, to be careful about just how much authority to lend to any particular work or idea.
One of the useful features of the text is the side-bar boxes inserted at various points. For example, during the discussion on Freud's development of sexuality (obviously a major theme in Freud from the start), there are brief discussions, set apart from the primary strand of the text, on the Super-Ego, Perversion, the Castration Complex, and Ambivalence, developing further these ideas should the reader not be familiar with them, or at least not in the way with which Freud would be working with ideas derived from them. Each section on a key idea spans twenty to thirty pages, with a two-page summary concluding each, which gives a recap of the ideas (and provides a handy reference).
The book is designed so that each chapter can be a stand-alone essay, peripherally related to each other, but not dependent upon any particular order of reading. Should the reader want a quick introduction to Freud's development on society and religion, or an overview of Freud's case histories, those can be read independently or out of sequence without any loss of accessibility by the reader. Should this text be used as part of a class, the chapters can be rearranged to suit any number of syllabi patterns.
Part of the problem of putting Freud into a series like this is that the series requires the identification of key ideas. Thurschwell develops six key areas (as opposed to ideas). The first of these are Freud's early theories on hysteria, hynosis, cathartic methods, repression, fantasy, and free association. Next comes a discussion on dream and thought interpretation. Freud's ideas on sexuality occurs next, followed by an examination of some of the case studies conducted by Freud. These are generally accessible and fascinating, not the least of which reason comes from the work with and explorations of therapeutic relationship which, if occurring today, would be at least a breach of professional ethics, and at worst legally actionable! The final two subjects include Freud's mind-mapping ideas, and his ideas for the development of society and religion.
The concluding chapter, After Freud, highlights some key areas of development in relation to other thinkers, as well as points of possible exploration for the reader. Freud's thought vis--vis modern ideas such as feminism, film theory, art and literary criticism, and the dialectic process of going out of fashion and coming back into vogue make his ideas as they apply to the continuing development of philosophical and intellectual history, particularly in the areas of art and literature, a relevant if controversial segment in intellectual development.
As do the other volumes in this series, Thurschwell concludes with an annotated bibliography of works by Freud, works on Freud, further readings on psychoanalytic theory and practice, and some internet resources.
While this series focuses intentionally upon literary theory, in fact this is only the starting point. For Freud (as for others in this series) the expanse is far too broad to be drawn into such narrow guidelines, and the important and impact of the ideas extends out into the whole range of intellectual development. As intellectual endeavours of every sort depend upon language, understanding, and interpretation, the thorough comprehension of how and why we know what we know is crucial.

A solid introduction
By B. F. Mooney
For years, it was hard to specifically recommend any particular introduction to Freud. This book can serve that purpose, however, whether the reader intends to go on and read Freud himself or not. A reader will come away with a grasp of basic Freudian ideas, and understand why they are still controversial and important. While much can be said for simply jumping in and reading An Interpretation of Dreams or Five Lectures on Psychoanalysis, since Freud is a fine writer and has been masterfully translated by the Stracheys, this book could be read first to make any subsequent reading of Freud a richer, more insightful experience.

The explanations are clear, the coverage comprehensive given the size of the volume, the writing interesting, and the author clearly understands her subject material. The annotated bibliography is another plus, an excellent guide for further reading.

The emphasis on a literary theory approach is sound, even for those who have other purposes in mind, for as the author suggests, all psychoanalysis is a form of "reading".

Good book... but I love Lacan
By James Crue
This was a pretty good book. But i think Lacanian psychoanalysis is way better than Freud's. Even though Lacan always claims be remaining extremely faithful to Freud, Lacan's theory is a big evolution from that of Freud's. Thurschwell definitely writes and presents Freud in a logical and interesting way...but I am just too enamored by Lacan to be enamored by Freud. Lacan's interpretations of Freud do so much.

Who Needs Magic?, by Kathy McCullough

The sequel to DON'TEXPECT MAGIC!

Now that Delaney Collins knows she’s a fairy godmother, she’s ready to make magic happen. But first, she has to find her next client. And it’s not as easy as she thought it would be.

Delaney’s spending the summer working at Treasures, a secondhand store at the mall, surrounded by cool vintage boots—and potential clients. But when she finally feels a connection with Jeni, a girl who needs a life-changing, happily-ever-after wish . . . Jeni doesn’t want her help. And to make matters worse, Delaney finds herself competing with another f.g. Glittery, sparkly Ariella is an uber-f.g., granting wishes with a flick of her lemon candy stick, while Delaney can’t seem to make anything happen. Not even a summer romance with her boyfriend, Flynn.

It takes more than waving a chopstick to make big wishes come true. But what good is being an f.g. if you can’t make the boy you like want to be with you as much as you want to be with him?

Praise for Don't Expect Magic:

“A supernaturally touched rom-com, this is a bright, whimsical romp featuring a suitably sassy heroine with a killer pair of black leather boots . . . excellent comfort reading.” —The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

“Brilliantly timed moments of situational comedy . . . plenty to like in this debut.” —Kirkus Reviews

“An enjoyable read with sprinklings of magic.” —VOYA

Delaney Collins Casts a Spell
By MistR
I read "Don't Expect Magic," Kathy McCullough's first book about Delaney Collins, with trepidation; being neither young nor a girl, I'm not exactly the target demographic. Silly me: great stories are universal, and I was hooked. But at least I'm a fast learner. So when "Who Needs Magic" came out, I snapped it up and was not disappointed. The book transported me right back into confused adolescence, when absolutely nothing makes sense, least of all romance. Again, the magic is both fun and then unexpectedly deep, and the book makes for a rewarding and delightful read.

Not as good as the first but still enjoyable
By S. Power
Who Needs Magic by Kathy McCullough is the sequel to Don't Expect Magic staring teenage Fairy Godmother Delaney. Delaney having granted her first wish is heading into summer itching to get another client. When she meets another teen fairy godmother she starts doubting her own abilities while also being competitive.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first. Delaney's sefishness level was much higher than it was in the previous book and I just wanted to knock her upside the head so she'd get a clue. The book was also missing the sweet romance as Delaney's boyfriend goes away for the summer. The book was still cute and had a sweet ending with nice lessons learned. Readers of the first book will enjoy this if not as much as the first.

Appropriateness: There's no adult content in this book, I recommend it for readers 12-16

a fun addition to a previously self-contained story
By Miss Print
Delaney Collins is ready to embrace her inner fairy godmother (f. g.) and grant some big wishes. But three months after granting her first big wish, Delaney is no closer to finding her next client.

Aside from the f. g. confusion, Delaney has high hopes for her summer. She'll get to spend more quality (read: alone) time with her boyfriend, Flynn. She's working at a fantastic vintage store with tons of boots she can re-make and re-style. She's even getting along better with her father despite his tendency to shift into self-help speak and his total lack of help in sharing his f. g. magic-wish-granting ways.

Unfortunately, while Delaney knows that wishes do come true, her dreams of a great summer do not. Flynn is distant, her father is distracted, and Delaney's powers remain frustratingly mysterious.

When Delaney meets Ariella--an f. g. with a lot more experience (and power)--Delaney starts to feel even more uncertain about her own magic abilities. Delaney will have to work hard to harness her powers and make sense of her life if she wants to get her summer back on track in Who Needs Magic? (2013) by Kathy McCullough.

Who Needs Magic? is the sequel to McCullough's debut novel Don't Expect Magic.

Delaney is a tough-talking, no-nonsense girl. She is sarcastic and she wears all black. This contrast between Delaney's exterior and her fairy-godmother background continues to provide a lot of humor (and some snark) in this second installment.

Delaney's mother has been dead for longer in this novel, but her grief is sometimes still fresh. McCullough handles Delaney's mixed feelings about her new life thoughtfully and honestly to create an authentic portrayal of a girl who is still trying to find her way.

Who Needs Magic? is introspective as Delaney tries to balance her personal life with her wish-granting. Moments where she tries to figure out what comes next now that she and Flynn are actually dating add another dimension to this story.

While Who Needs Magic? is a lot of fun, it's sadly not quite as endearing as Don't Expect Magic. Delaney loses some of her focus and forward momentum in the face of self-doubt and insecurity forcing her to relearn some important lessons about trusting herself.

Who Needs Magic? is a fun addition to a previously self-contained story. Recommended for fans of the first book. Check out this series if you are fan of fractured and remixed fairy tale tropes.

The Perennial Wisdom: Mystics, Skeptics, and Pragmatists, by Courtney Schlosser

The search for knowledge and wisdom has always been a many-sided pursuit. Throughout human history, mystics and seekers have shared powerful and intuitive views about the Divine, while skeptics and nonbelievers have been quick to explain these beliefs away as self-deception.

But the Truth is more complex and evolving than either of these approaches—hence the need for philosophers who work to separate and connect the divine and the natural, the subjective and the objective, and the relative and the absolute.

Through an experimental and open-minded approach to the world of spirituality, the philosophy of perennialism recognizes the foundation that all of the world’s religious traditions have always had in common, regardless of culture, location, or generation. It also inspires meaningful reflections and revelations regarding the nature of the divine, the meaning of eternity, and the purpose of life itself.

This academic look at perennialism provides a thorough evaluation of the spiritual philosophy from three directions: mystical, skeptical, and pragmatic. Through these varied points of view, The Perennial Wisdom provokes meditation and thought regarding some of life’s most challenging mysteries, as seen through the eyes of students of the perennial philosophy.

"The Perennial Wisdom" by Courtney Schlosser
By Pablo Seeto
From the beginning I found this book to be well worth reading. "The Perennial Wisdom" is a philosophical synthesis of Asian religious philosophy with the traditions of my ancestors, the Greeks. Schlosser lets us into the mind of the philosopher. A must read for anyone familiar or wanting to be familiar with Eckhart Tolle and the Perennials. The book affirms my theistic beliefs while giving all faiths and philosophies a voice.

A Dark and Fantastic Tale Featuring The Ever Cunning And Insidious Skaven!
By Allenpoe
Plot: Heiko Geissner while investigating a series of strange, bizarre and seemingly impossible thefts uncovers a plot concocted by the clever and cruel Skaven to attack the town of Waldenhof, an attack that will be blamed on the dwarves, that will most assuredly also start a war, which will leave the way open for the evil ratman to take over. Can he stop them!?

Writing: It was fantastic, I loved every bit of it, I could easily imagine the looks and expressions the characters had on their faces as they spoke, it was like I was watching a movie of the novel it was so easy to imagine what was happening, everything was done with the utmost care and full focus to make this as great a read as possible as Bruno Lee always puts his full effort towards his works.

Action: The action was very fun as well, I always enjoy a fight that involves Skaven, we dont see much action until a bit close to the end of the book, but it is so very well worth the wait, and so brilliantly done.

Characters: The human characters were well written and it was interesting had they all had their own flaws and issues they had to deal with and the reasons they were going on this quest to try and stop the Skaven

The Skaven characters were perfectly done and I never ever tire of the way Bruno Lee portrays them, cold, calculating, cunning, back stabbing, cowardly, pure power hungry monsters! Each had their own schemes against each other. Which ones worked and which ones failed? Read and find out

The Dwarven characters, were portrayed in true Warhammer Dwarfitude, and it was clear how Ungrim Ironfist the Slayer King of Karak Kadrin would react to Heiko's request, but he finds help in the form of the always fun to read Malakai Makaisson and a slayer named Thogri, I do hope sometime soon Malakai Makaisson gets his own trilogy.

Thank You for reading and stay tuned when next I will be reviewing Brian Craig's Wine Of Dreams
