Classic of political science that is still relevant today

Dahl's work, which has been cited by countless political scientists since it was first published, provides a useful framework for the examination of democracy (which is not quite equivalent to what he terms 'polyarchy'; democracy consists of a bit more than a polyarchal system). The book is particularly concerned with the two main variables of political orders: 'competition' (public contestation among various political actors) and 'participation' (defined with regards to the right to participate). Using these variables, these systems can graded based on whether they possess these qualities to a greater or lesser degree. While most modern political systems fall in a 'gray area' (they are neither perfectly competitive nor inclusive), Dahl believes that all should strive towards the ideal type, or polyarchy. Dahl goes on to outline the benefits of a polyarchal system and the various ways in which such a system can be achieved. Yet, Dahl also recognizes that the transition to polyarchy is neither inevitable nor invariably desirable. Certain conditions are needed in order for the full benefits of a polyarchy to be realized. Thus, the minimal nature of Dahl's conception allows flexibility in its application. This is why his notion of democracy, as defined through polyarchy, has been adopted time again by those engaging in the debate over democracy, including such luminaries as Samuel P. Huntington and Larry Diamond.

Excellent book for an Android Newbie

I recently purchased a tablet and with it came the Android 4.0 operating system. As a long-time Windows user, I was in a deeeep information hole. When I asked the tablet salesman about books that would supplement the tab's manual, she breezily replied, "It's so intuitive, you really don't need anything else"!. For an old dog, learning new tricks, I can say that she was wrong!!!
The Rough Guide to Android Phones and Tablets was EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED. The material is simple to understand, the illustrations and the information very clear and timely and it has been up-dated so that even the most recent apps have been reviewed. I could not ask for a better primer for Android.
The vendor was great to deal with, obviously professional, using mailing material that protected the book from any damage whatsoever. The 'Missing Manual' for Android devices

Keeping this review short as I am writing on an Android phone. This is an excellent guide to setting up your device and finding best in class apps, and learning how to use them. A curious omission is how to set up printing to a WiFi or wired printer. I strongly recommend the Printer Share app from the Google Play site (formerly Anroid Market).

The Rosbergs are, indeed, America's Family Coaches, and have the God-given gift of communicating the needs of husbands and wives. They not only provide specific coaching, but also include fantastic examples to illustrate that!

If you're thinking about marriage or are in one and want to "divorce-proof" it and live to fulfill your spouse's needs, they are the authors for you. If your marriage is on the rocks, with God's help, they provide you a road back. Remember, your marriage is not about you, it's about honoring God and fulfilling your mate.

This is the best book for married couples. It will teach you how to really love each other...unconditionally. It's also an easy read...I couldn't put it down and finished it in two days. This books really WILL help you recapture your dream marriage.

right on target with what we need right now.

If only we knew and followed these principals from the start, what a difference it could have made in our and our children's life. So much pain and regrets could have been prevented. This is an answer to some of my deepest prayers and not a moment to soon. There is hope.
I recommend this to both those who have a broken marriage and those who think they have a good one. I now have a personal application to the saying, "good is the enemy of great". I recommend this to those thinking about marriage, engaged, newly married, and in their golden years.

About the Author
Dr. Clare McAndrew is a cultural economist, investment analyst, and published author. Clare completed her PhD in economics at Trinity College Dublin in 2001, where she also lectured and taught economics for four years. She then led a number of research projects for the Arts Council of the U.K., publishing studies on the effects of regulation, taxation and other issues in the visual arts market. In 2002, Clare joined U.S. firm Kusin & Company, a boutique investment banking firm specializing in art investment, as chief economist where she worked for three years. She returned to Ireland in 2005, and continued her work in the art market in a private consulting capacity with a global client base. Clare founded Arts Economics in 2007 to focus her efforts on art market research and analysis, and works with a network of private consultants and academic researchers in providing research and consulting services to the global art trade and financial sector.

Fine Art and High Finance is an authoritative source on a variety of subjects centered around finance and investment in fine art. This book is for the serious art investor and/or their investment advisor. If you are a serious investor in fine art or an advisor to serious investors in fine art, you will want to keep a copy of this book handy. This book is not for the reader who has a casual interest in art.

The book covers the following topics: Art appraisals, prices and valuations. Art price indices, Art risk, Financing of art, Art Funds, The government and the art trade, Insurance and the art market, Art and taxation in the US, Art and taxation in the UK, Art conservation and restoration, and Illegal art trade.

In addition to her contributions, the book is edited by Dr, Clare McAndrew. There are nineteen other expert contributors for the book.

Each subject is covered in great detail. This is a very scholarly work with footnotes and reference sources.

I believe the proper use of this book is as a reference book. That is, when you want in-depth information about a particular topic related to investing in fine art, look up that topic. In my opinion it is not intended to be read through from cover to cover unless perhaps you are a studying investment in fine art.

I was impressed with the quality of information contained in this book. It is largely a reflection of the quality of the contributing authors. However, I believe the potential audience is limited to those who are actively seeking an authoritative reference source.

This is a fabulous description of the fine art industry. Professor McAndrew has prepared a very thorough description of the economics of art.

Be forewarned. The players in this industry do not like investors.

If you plan on collecting art as an investor you will need the background information and studies Clare offers. This is must reading for my students of investing.
