About the Author

Kieran T. Sullivan, PhD, is a Professor of Psychology at Santa Clara University. She has published widely in the area of intimate relationships, including the predictors of relationship distress and divorce, prevention for relationship distress, and support processes in intimate relationships. Her current research focuses on support, control, and health behavior in intimate relationships and the effects of online communication on dating relationships. Dr. Sullivan is a licensed clinical psychologist.

Erika Lawrence, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of Arizona. Her research program has broadly focused on evidence-based interventions for perpetrators of intimate partner violence, the developmental course of intimate partner violence, and the developmental course of intimate relationship processes. She has over 100 publications and her work has been funded by NIMH, NICHD, the CDC and the DOJ. Over the last decade, Dr. Lawrence's research has been focused on developing and testing evidence-based treatments targeting intimate partner violence (IPV) and associated psychopathology for perpetrators, victims, and children. Dr. Lawrence also has extensive experience teaching and supervising undergraduate and graduate students and has maintained a couple therapy practice for two decades.

And he makes a good argument that slavery would not have died if it ...

Edward Baptist makes several strong arguments, some of which turn conventional wisdom on its head. Some of his arguments are difficult to read and go against our preferred versions of U.S.history.

He details how American slavery was one of the most productive economic institutions in world history and how the expansion of slavery made the U.S. into a modern industrial empire. He details how slavery, by use of torture and terrorism, increased productivity and made the cotton industry the biggest, most sustained, expansion of the economy in human history.

He makes the point that it wasn't just a Southern industry; indeed it benefitted the entire world -- from Northern banks, ship builders and industries that supported slavery (farm implements, whips, ropes, chains, etc) to the textile mills of Western Europe, especially Britain.

And he makes a good argument that slavery would not have died if it hadn't been for the Civil War. Indeed, from the founding of the nation, slavery had grown for 70 years at a rate unprecedented in human history. There's no evidence to suggest that such a profitable and productive industry would have ever died out on its own accord. He shows that the cotton industry was never as productive again, after it lost it's use of the whip.

Finally, he points out that the South brought about their own destruction. It was they that always pushed for more and more expansion of slavery (even contemplating taking over Cuba and all of Mexico!), which pushed Northerners into fearing for their own loss of political power. The Southern push for ever-growing slavery culminated in the creation of the new Republican Party, formed to not end slavery but to end it's expansion. The South then went to war in order to create its own government based on slavery. Thankfully, they were destroyed.

It's a very well written book that not only makes his arguments with well researched historical documents. He also adds powerful voice to the millions of men, women and children who suffered under the bondage of slavery.

Gripping and haunting

This is a five-star book for me not because, as the mouseover bubble read, "I love it!" but because it opened my eyes and because it haunts me. Baptist does a brilliant job at revealing the societally sociopathic links between "driving GDP" and "boosting individual productivity" through creative, innovative cruelty. The whole Western world is implicated. Did your forebears wear cotton clothing? Then they benefited from the monstrous, profit-driven cruelty that made cotton the number one industrial material in the world and the U.S. the most powerful and wealthiest nation in the world. Many times I had to set this book down and take a break from it, even though it was gripping reading. Any American who believes that he or she is miraculously innocent of any complicity in the violent, persistent, systemic racism in our society is being willfully blind. This research should guide our teaching of American history for decades to come.

Baptist's work is significant if only because he carefully and dispassionately details the intricacies of the economic slave trade vis a vis the industries (including cotton) it made possible, the ubiquity of physical and sexual abuse and exploitation, the systematic and deliberate destruction of family, language and community. Moreover, he echoes the call of black intellectuals like me for a re-examination of the language associated with the trade. It's a dense, but vivid tome, and I learned a lot.

This book is absolutely stunning. It includes general hair tips, hair product and accessories descriptions and uses, and tons of tutorials. This book has inspired me to try and do more with my hair, and there are so many options and styles to choose from. From modern looks to retro inspired styles, there truly is something for everyone. The instructions are clear and helpful, the pictures are beautiful, and there are drawings throughout to help emphasize the details. The book is so visually appealing too that instead of storing it away in a bookshelf or drawer, it's a perfect display piece on my vanity. The Sheriff and His Partner: a hot item at a real cool price.

The Sheriff and His Partner (TS&HP), written by Frank Harris and dated 4 April, 1891, must have started life as a dime novel or as content in some other pulp-fiction venue. Because it is such a short story, it seems odd to me that TS&HP is still treated as a standalone book, a giveaway from either Project Gutenberg or Amazon's Kindle Store.

The Kindle version is just 42 tiny screens, end-to-end. My beloved WordPerfect� counts some 140 words per Kindle screen and 4,161 words overall. The longest sentence in the story is 17 words. The Flesch-Kincaid index rates the story at 3rd grade reading level. (Parents should note that the low rating doesn’t mean TS&HP is kiddie lit. By comparison, Flesch-Kincaid rates Hemingway's fiction at 4th grade level.) In plain English, I’ll say that The Sheriff and His Partner is a bullet-quick read for adults who, having read the story themselves, might not want kiddies to read it at all because the denouement is pretty grizzly.

TS&HP is a bildungsroman, set in the year 1869 on the Kansas frontier. The narrator claims to be Frank Harris in his silly, unfledged youth. He reads law and clerks for a judge named Locock. Their office is in the town of Kiota, Kansas.

The plot is childishly simple: A bad-news pistolero named Tom Williams has a personal beef with Elwood County Sheriff Samuel Johnson, who is also a bad-news pistolero and whose office is in Kiota. Local gossip says that Williams and Johnson were partners in bygone days, somewhere back in Missouri. Partners in what, precisely, is unclear and is therefore moot.

Outlaw Williams is holed up in the town of Osawatomie, ten miles west of Kiota, and is wanted for numerous crimes. His latest offense was to waylay and rob at gunpoint a former, Elwood County judge named Shannon.

Every man in Kiota knows Sheriff Johnson will go to Osawatomie to arrest or kill (as may be) Tom Williams. Sheriff Johnson is popular with folks in Kiota but, gunslinger Williams being who and what he is, nobody in Kiota is certain that Johnson will survive the encounter. Accordingly, Sheriff Johnson and the men of Kiota have a confab in the saloon to figure out who and how many will go with the sheriff to see justice done.

At the confab, whiskey shooters are shot. The talk is terse and serious. Suddenly, in the middle of it all, the law student / narrator appears. A lippy little squirt mistaking himself for a man, Narrator has some opinions and is anxious to impress other men with his good sense. He listens to the talk for a few moments before he lets the crowd know that he doesn't understand why Sheriff Johnson will not man up and do the job personally, by himself. After all, that's what the sheriff gets paid for. Why then should Sheriff Johnson ask others to risk their lives for free?

Narrator then adds offhandedly: "I think it would be cowardly to take two or three against a single man. I said one should go, and I say so still."

Sheriff Johnson gets in Narrator's face and sneers: "Do you? I guess you'd go alone, wouldn't you? to bring Williams in?"

Coolly, Narrator retorts: "If I were paid for it I should."

As the mouthy youngster spoke, Sheriff Johnson's face went white with anger. So angry was Johnson that the law student raised his hands to defend himself, thinking the sheriff was set to reply with his fists.

So immature is Narrator that he cannot understand why everyone in the room is suddenly angry and disgusted with him. Next morning at the law office, he learns that he was taken at his word. Narrator is working at his desk when Sheriff Johnson walks in, hands him a badge and a gun, swears him in as a deputy, orders his new deputy to go to Osawatomie, arrest Tom Williams and bring him back. Then he pays his new deputy, in advance, a handsome fee of $5.25 to do the job. For Narrator's convenience, a horse and buggy wait outside in the street.

Narrator hesitates for a moment before he grasps what's actually happening. Then he understands: he doesn't really have to go after Williams but, because he stuck his trigger finger in his mouth last night, if he doesn't go he will forfeit the respect of every man in Kiota – all of whom are standing around waiting to see what he will do. A fool but no coward, he climbs into the buggy, points the horse at Osawatomie and settles in for the ride. As he rides, he ponders his situation further.

Halfway to Osawatomie, Narrator has an epiphany. There are two paragraphs at this point. In those two paragraphs, Narrator reasons his way through how and why he got into such a mess and what he must now do to get out of it. Readers, of course, are privy to Narrator's thoughts and we thereby arrive at a full, manly understanding of the white male's nineteenth-century, frontier ethos. The Sheriff and His Partner may be pulp fiction, but that two-paragraph passage is a wonderful read.

Events in Osawatomie are anticlimactic and comedic. Having had his epiphany, Narrator now believes he is a man. Too bad his bravado still makes him foolish. He walks into the Osawatomie saloon, pulls a revolver on Williams and tells the gunman he's under arrest. Williams must go to Kiota and face justice.

Narrator's life is saved because Williams, jealous of his fierce reputation, doesn't want it put about that he was so petty mean as to shoot and kill a lippy, punk-ass law student. Williams will not surrender his weapon but sincerely promises not to shoot the 'deputy sheriff.' Instead, the outlaw makes a generous offer. He will get in the buggy and ride with the deputy back to Kiota, there to meet the sheriff. Williams does so because he wants to shoot Sheriff Johnson – his former partner now his sworn enemy – and sees this botched arrest as a good chance to get Sheriff Johnson in front of his gun.

The upshot is that Narrator and Williams arrive in Kiota. There ensues a showdown in which everything gets settled most ricky tick. This writer won't tell who gets killed or how many. Those who want to know how TS&HP plays out will have to get a copy and read it for themselves.

The Sheriff and His Partner is Frank Harris at his imaginative best. It's fast action. It reads like a true adventure. It's free! Download it at work this afternoon and read it on your home-bound commute. There's nobody on the subway you wanted to talk to anyhow.

W. James Popham has spent the bulk of his educational career as a teacher. His first teaching assignment, for example, was in a small eastern Oregon high school where he taught English and social studies while serving as yearbook advisor, class sponsor, and unpaid tennis coach.� That recompense meshed ideally with the quality of his coaching.

Unique tale of darkness and light

Nurse Annie Mitchell and her new husband Keith are called away from their honeymoon as a precautionary measure, little dreaming that they will be caught up in WWII's bloody Battle of the Bulge. An impulsive mission to rescue Keith goes awry, leaving Annie's friend Mouse dead. Before Keith and Annie can make it back to the American lines, he is killed and she is captured. Annie's only thought is escape from the wounded German soldier who shot her husband, but the enemy's behavior begins to threaten her preconceived notions. Could a murdering Nazi actually have compassion?

A gripping story beautifully told. Building on the success of his previous WWII novels, Cavanaugh crafts a unique tale of the darkness and light struggling in Europe during that time. He delves deeply into the lives of his two primary characters, bringing their emotions and motivations to the surface, especially Annie's complex struggle. The skillful plot matches the characters and never seems contrived, though the ending leaves readers wanting another chapter or two. Nurse Annie Mitchell saw firsthand the atrocities of war and concluded that the German soldier was inhuman and thoroughly depraved. But when a rogue rescue mission ended in tragedy, a bereft Annie finds herself a captured prisoner behind enemy lines in Belgium's Ardennes Forest. Her captor Karl Hausmann doesn't fit her stereotype of the brutal German soldier. In the days following her capture, Annie must reconsider everything she thought she knew about her enemy. Dear Enemy is as entertaining as it is thoughtful and thought-provoking reading. Jack Cavanaugh has once again demonstrated his mastery of engaged and engaging storytelling. terrific historical fiction

During World War II, American nurse Annie Rawlings married Keith Mitchell only to have their honeymoon canceled due to a mission need. Annie has worked with the dying and maimed and believes the Nazis and for that matter all Germans are evil deserving only death for the atrocities they have fostered on people.

A rescue mission behind enemy lines in Belgium fails leaving Annie held prisoner by a wounded German soldier Karl who killed her beloved Keith. As he keeps her safe she helps heal him and they forge camaraderie through a love of music and faith that God will save humanity. As they become more than friends, Karl is captured and becomes a POW. This should be the end of a war torn yet warm relationship, but Annie needs to at least know her Karl is safe so after the war ends she begins her search.

This is a terrific historical fiction novel that grips the audience with an opening paradox that sets the tone of a tale that uses irony and contradiction to tell a powerful human tale. The story line occurs during World War II in which the heroine loathes all Germans until she is forced into close quarters with the soldier who killed her spouse. Annie soon realizes he is a young caring nice man caught in the maelstrom of brutal misunderstandings by old men who send others to fight and die (history repeats itself). With a character driven anti-war message DEAR ENEMY peels away the armor to reach the souls of two foes leaving the inside for the audience to realize that we are human so let's give peace a chance.
