Bees, Wasps, and Ants: The Indispensable Role of Hymenoptera in Gardens, by Eric Grissell

Few insects are more important than bees, wasps, and ants. They maintain the garden’s biological balance, fertilize vegetables, fruits, and flowers, and recycle nutrients within the soil. It’s no exaggeration to say that a garden can’t be understood without an understanding of its insects.

Bees, Wasps, and Ants explores the importance of the Hymenoptera and explains how gardeners can encourage (or discourage) them in the garden. Part One includes a summary of their biology and a tour of what role they play in each part of the garden. Part Two takes a closer look at the individual groups within the family, including sawflies, horntails, woodwasps, parasitic wasps, predatory wasps, bees, and ants.

Bees, Wasps, and Ants is sure to persuade even the most insectphobic reader to invite these fascinating creatures into their gardens.

From Booklist
If ever a group of garden creatures gets a bad rap, it’s bees, ants, and wasps. Yet, as Grissell so strikingly points out, most of the time their negative reputation is either grossly overstated or decidedly undeserved. Although the role of the order Hymenoptera in garden settings is of vital importance, most homeowners and quite a few gardeners do whatever they can to remove nests, hills, and hives at first sight. It’s a knee-jerk reaction that can have devastating results, for these creatures are essential for pollination, fertilization, and even pest-control. Reviewing their impact, revealing their habits and habitats, and profiling them via such inventive terms as the garden’s “cows,” “wolves,” and “police,” Grissell strikes a fine balance between scientific examination and anecdotal evidence. Although not sufficiently illustrated to serve as a field guide, Grissell’s extensive exploration of this insect order is highly informative and genuinely useful. --Carol Haggas

Great introduction to a feared and misunderstood group of insects
By Afan of Sitagyl Manor
I absolutely love this book and find it to be a most valuable guide to a much-feared group of insects. As a shutterbug new to macro photography of insects, I have become immersed in a world most people ignore unless they are frightened by an aggressive Hymenopteran. The photos in this book are first rate and have helped me with identification of my own tiny subjects. As the author points out, this is not a field guide per se, but a sound introduction to the natural history and biology of these insects. Their roles in nature are complex and fascinating. This book is aimed at serious students of insect life and garden enthusiasts. The writing is clear albeit somewhat technical at times, which is to be expected as it is a science book. The author is especially good on the Parasitoid Wasps, the main focus of his own professional work in the field. If you enjoy above average science books and have an interest in gardening or insect photography you should get yourself a copy of this book.

Informative and entertaining
By Barbara Pleasant
To an amateur entomologist like me, this book is a dream come true. Eric Grissell uses enough scientific lingo to keep topics clear, but often wanders into personal territory as he explores the lives of bees, wasps and ants. Some of his stories are surprisingly funny!

As head garden writer for Mother Earth News, I initially picked up this book to learn more about wasps and hornets -personal passions for years. Now Grissell has me interested in ants. Although I don't have room for more books, I'm making room for this one next to Whitney Cranshaw's Garden Insects of North America. If you're fascinated by insects, you need both.

An Essential Book for the Organic Gardener and Bug Watcher
By David B Richman
Eric Grissell was one of my instructors in a short course in parasitic Hymenoptera that I took at the University of Maryland a number of years ago. All of my instructors were excellent and Eric was particularly good. It was thus with some interest that I picked up his book "Bees, Wasps, and Ants: The Indispensable Role of Hymenoptera in Gardens" at the local library. I was not disappointed as his book is a gem! With well-written chapters and beautiful color photographs it is just what the home organic gardener and insect watcher would want to understand an important component of the ecosystem. As it turns out the Hymenoptera contains among its members numerous natural enemies of insect pests and a plethora of pollinators. While ants may sometimes invade our homes and bees, wasps and ants my sting us, they more than make up for their faults (from our point of view) by the numerous services that they provide. One could easily get lost just in studying their behavior, but the fruit and vegetable crops that they protect and pollinate are a great bonus. Eric Grissell has provided a fascinating glimpse of their secret life within our backyards and has in the process provided the home gardener with essential knowledge for the production of a bounty of pesticide-free crops.

I recommend this volume without reservation!

Amazon.com Review
In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, J.K. Rowling offers up equal parts danger and delight--and any number of dragons, house-elves, and death-defying challenges. Now 14, her orphan hero has only two more weeks with his Muggle relatives before returning to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Yet one night a vision harrowing enough to make his lightning-bolt-shaped scar burn has Harry on edge and contacting his godfather-in-hiding, Sirius Black. Happily, the prospect of attending the season's premier sporting event, the Quidditch World Cup, is enough to make Harry momentarily forget that Lord Voldemort and his sinister familiars--the Death Eaters--are out for murder.

Readers, we will cast a giant invisibility cloak over any more plot and reveal only that You-Know-Who is very much after Harry and that this year there will be no Quidditch matches between Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. Instead, Hogwarts will vie with two other magicians' schools, the stylish Beauxbatons and the icy Durmstrang, in a Triwizard Tournament. Those chosen to compete will undergo three supreme tests. Could Harry be one of the lucky contenders?

But Quidditch buffs need not go into mourning: we get our share of this great game at the World Cup. Attempting to go incognito as Muggles, 100,000 witches and wizards converge on a "nice deserted moor." As ever, Rowling magicks up the details that make her world so vivid, and so comic. Several spectators' tents, for instance, are entirely unquotidian. One is a minipalace, complete with live peacocks; another has three floors and multiple turrets. And the sports paraphernalia on offer includes rosettes "squealing the names of the players" as well as "tiny models of Firebolts that really flew, and collectible figures of famous players, which strolled across the palm of your hand, preening themselves." Needless to say, the two teams are decidedly different, down to their mascots. Bulgaria is supported by the beautiful veela, who instantly enchant everyone--including Ireland's supporters--over to their side. Until, that is, thousands of tiny cheerleaders engage in some pyrotechnics of their own: "The leprechauns had risen into the air again, and this time, they formed a giant hand, which was making a very rude sign indeed at the veela across the field."

Long before her fourth installment appeared, Rowling warned that it would be darker, and it's true that every exhilaration is equaled by a moment that has us fearing for Harry's life, the book's emotions running as deep as its dangers. Along the way, though, she conjures up such new characters as Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody, a Dark Wizard catcher who may or may not be getting paranoid in his old age, and Rita Skeeter, who beetles around Hogwarts in search of stories. (This Daily Prophet scoop artist has a Quick-Quotes Quill that turns even the most innocent assertion into tabloid innuendo.) And at her bedazzling close, Rowling leaves several plot strands open, awaiting book 5. This fan is ready to wager that the author herself is part veela--her pen her wand, her commitment to her world complete. (Ages 9 and older) --Kerry Fried

From Publishers Weekly
In our Best Books citation, PW wrote, "The fourth Harry Potter adventure, centering on an inter-school competition, boasts details that are as ingenious and original as ever. A spectacular climax will leave readers breathless." Ages 8-12. (July)

From School Library Journal
Grade 4 Up-Harry Potter is back in J.K. Rowling's fourth installment of his adventures (Scholastic, 2000). He is 14 years old and in his fourth year at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where the traditional Inter-House Quidditch Cup has been temporarily suspended so that the Triwizard Tournament can be held. Only three students, one from each of the biggest schools of wizardry, may compete, but the Goblet of Fire that chooses the champions from each school mysteriously produces a fourth nameDHarry Potter. As the school readies for the tournament, it becomes obvious to Harry's allies that Voldemort is plotting something dastardlyDbut only at the very end does he show his hand, springing a trap that Harry only narrowly escapes. Jim Dale, who has narrated the previous Harry Potter audiobooks, succeeds marvelously at the Herculean effort of voicing about 125 characters. By now, Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Hagrid are so well known to him that his renditions of their voices are practiced and flawless. He also invests new characters such as Mad-Eye Moody and Winky with voices that enhance their already vivid personalities. Dale intones magical commands with such great authority that one would almost think he was a wizard himself. Twenty hours is a long time to listen to a book, but the combination of Rowling's enthralling adventure and Dale's limber narration will easily see kids through to the very last sentence.

Do not buy Kindle version - defective
By Saly
The Kindle version is defective as some reviewers wrote (I wish I had read them before I purchased), on an iPad with Kindle app in my case. When reading with the device held in landspace (side ways) position, the last sentence on the first column repeats at the beginning of the second column on every page. Additionally, sections of certain sentences are missing randomly. Oddly, this problem seems to go away when the device is held in portrait orientation.

I chatted with Amazon tech support, but after trying several fixes nothing helped and they are giving me a credit for the purchase. They also told me that this version will not be available for purchase until the problem is fixed, but I still see it listed for purchase. So, buyers beware.

Champion novel
By kittybot
What can you say about the Harry Potter books that hasn't already been said? Obviously this is not the book to start with (you want Philosopher's (or Sorcerer's, depending on locale) Stone for that one), but it's a very skillful bridge between the more lighthearted first books and the much darker later books. Not my favorite of the series, but then I love the later, darker, somewhat more complex ones that come later. This is solid fantasy, with a lot of unexpected twists and turns, excellent character development, an engaging story, and 'bad guys' that aren't just one-dimensional (the ones that may seem so gain more complexity in later books, as well). Any fantasy fan - or reader of any kind - absolutely needs to read this series. As with any Harry Pottery novel, if you've only seen the movie, you definitely need to read the book as so much is left out (like entire plot lines) and much of the magic (see what I did there) is lost in translation. If you've never read Harry Potter before, go back and start at the beginning. If you've read up til now and are unsure about continuing, I urge you to do so. The books only get better as the series goes on.

CHAPTER 1 RUSSIA
Aero City is located in a rural area three hundred kilometers northwest of Moscow. Built in the Soviet era, the town was a major center for aviation research and many of Russia’s civil airliners, military transport aircraft, and guided missiles were built within its giant factories.

In 1994 the government announced plans to sell the whole of Russian industry under a scheme known as “mass privatization.” The process was riddled with corruption and many of Russia’s most valuable assets fell into the hands of a small group of men and women who became known as “the oligarchs.”

One such man was Denis Obidin, who used his position as a junior bank official to fraudulently lend large sums of money to his own wife and parents. Obidin then used the cash to buy up shares that the government had given to factory workers who had no idea of their true worth. By 1996, he owned a slice of the Russian aerospace industry that was thought to be worth more than $800 million.

Today, Obidin not only controls all of the factories and most of the land and property in Aero City, but has had himself appointed mayor in a rigged election. When a local police chief announced plans to investigate corruption within Obidin’s administration, the officer was found dead in his apartment and Obidin put his brother Vladimir in charge of law enforcement.

Obidin initially laid out grand plans to design and build a modern Russian airliner that could compete with Boeing and Airbus, but his reputation for corruption scared off foreign investors and no airline will purchase aircraft from a company with a shady past and an uncertain future.

After a series of layoffs, the unemployment rate in Aero City exceeds 80 percent. Obidin’s one remaining factory produces a small number of missiles for the Russian military and upgrades elderly Russian airliners by fitting efficient British jet engines. But with the Russian military slashing its budgets and airlines steadily replacing their fleets with Western aircraft, this work is drying up.

Obidin has given up hope of raising the billions needed for his airliner project and put out word to international weapons dealers that everything is for sale. For the right price, a visitor to Aero City can purchase anything from a batch of rocket fuel or blueprints for a missile guidance system, all the way up to a truckload of anti-ship missiles capable of sinking an American aircraft carrier.

(Excerpt from a classified mission briefing for James Adams, August 2006)

Denis Obidin’s luxury home had featured in glossy magazines both in Russia and across northern Europe. The rambling wooden structure was three stories high, with eight bedrooms, a ballroom where Obidin’s wife hosted parties, and an eighty-meter spire at one end. The spire was topped off with a rotating platform and a retractable dome that would occasionally be opened to reveal a large telescope.

Denis claimed to love astronomy, but everyone knew that the tower was really a sniper post. Wealthy Russians were often targeted by kidnappers, and the sniper was a last line of defense against anyone who managed to breach the electrified perimeter, avoid the guard dogs, and make it past the machine-gun-toting guards who patrolled the compound.

The huge double-glazed windows in Denis Obidin’s library looked out over an expanse of forest. The leaves were autumnal and the ground was dusted with snow. A romantic might have found it beautiful, but James Adams could only see cold.

It was warm inside the Obidins’ house, with its under-floor heating and a gas generator buried beneath the garage, but the rest of Aero City got its electricity from a decrepit nuclear power station five hundred kilometers away and suffered regular outages. After a month living in Aero City, James had concluded that the only thing in the world worse than school was a school where you spent the entire day wearing fingerless gloves and watching your classmates’ breath curling up toward the ceiling.

“It’s snowing,” James said, in Russian, as he looked across a long desk at Denis Obidin’s six-year-old son, Mark.

James had been learning Russian intensively for three years and was fluent, though his accent was nowhere near good enough for him to pass as a native. James asked Mark to repeat the phrase in English.

“Zisss nowing,” Mark said.

“Not bad,” James said cheerfully. “Now let’s try English numbers again.”

The little boy shook his head and screwed up his face before breaking into a giant yawn. “I’m too tired.”

“Come on, Mark,” James said sternly. “I’m your tutor and if you don’t concentrate you’re not going to pass your entrance exam.”

Mark broke into an evil smile. “I’ll tell my daddy it was your fault and he’ll punish you.”

“Oh, you reckon, do you?” James scoffed.

Mark folded his arms. “My uncle Vladimir is the chief of police. He’s got his own police station and his own cells. He can do whatever he likes.”

“Maybe he’ll put you in a cell if you don’t pass your exam.”

“Nah, he loves me.” Mark grinned. “He buys me all the biggest Lego sets. I don’t ever want to go to a stupid English boarding school. I like it here.”

“At least the classrooms are nice and warm in England,” James said, giving a shrug. “And the lights never go out in the middle of the day. Besides, we all have to do things we don’t like, kiddo. My aunt and uncle make me come here after school every day and teach English to a horrible smelly little boy. And all because they’re trying to be nice to your daddy.”

Mark got out of his chair, ran around the desk, and tried looking mean as he bunched his fist under James’s nose. “I’m not smelly. You’re smelly.”

“You wouldn’t dare.”

Mark smiled as he gently nudged his fist against James’s nose.

“GRRRRR,” James bellowed. “You’re dead, you chicken nugget.”

The little boy cracked up laughing as James scooped him off the floor and flipped him upside down so that his hair hung down in strands.

“Now I’ll use you as a broom,” James said, as he lowered Mark’s head toward the floor and swung him gently from side to side, before setting the youngster down on the edge of the desk.

“Do that again,” Mark squealed, giggling so much that he had spit bubbling out the corner of his mouth.

“I’ll do it again, but only if you say I want to be a broom in English.”

“Never in stupid English,” Mark said indignantly, as he jumped off the table and crashed face-first onto a beanbag by the window.

Both boys turned toward the door as it clicked open. Vladimir Obidin stood in the doorway. The powerfully built man wore the crisply tailored uniform of a senior police officer.

“James, you’re leaving now,” he said.

James looked at his watch as Mark sighed with disappointment.

“It’s only twenty past,” James said.

“There’s a meeting here tonight,” Vladimir said. He abruptly changed his tone to one of anger. “I don’t justify myself to children. When I say go, you go.”

Vladimir sent a shiver down James’s back. The man had worked for Russian military intelligence and had a reputation for extracting confessions from Aero City’s criminals with a set of dentist’s tools and a blow lamp. James tried not to feel intimidated as he said good-bye to Mark, grabbed his backpack, and stepped out of the library.

“I’ve got a long trek home,” James said nervously. “Can I use the bathroom?”

Vladimir huffed as though James had just imposed some great burden upon him. “Quickly then.”

James stepped into a plush washroom, with a huge spa bath and beech-panelled walls. He slid off his backpack and—all too aware that Vladimir was on the other side of the door—quietly pulled a Nokia communicator out of the side pocket.

As James flipped it open, he noticed that the communicator had picked up some e-mails. Cell phone coverage in Aero City was flaky and his phone tended to receive a whole bunch of messages and missed calls whenever he passed through an area with good reception. But this wasn’t a good moment to read them. He switched to a wireless messaging application and tapped in a four-digit number to access a hidden menu.

James had dropped a dozen pinhead-sized listening devices around the Obidins’ house over the three weeks in which he’d been tutoring Mark after school. Rows of bright green signal bars on the communicator screen showed that they were all powered up and transmitting perfectly.

“Shift it,” Vladimir shouted, pounding his fist on the door. “I’m a busy man.”

“Just shaking off,” James said, as he shoved the communicator inside his pack and raced for the door. At the last minute he remembered to flush the toilet.

Mark gave James a friendly wave from one of the first-floor windows as Vladimir escorted him down the woodchip driveway toward the solid steel gate at the front of the Obidin compound.

“All right, Slava,” James nodded, as he passed a guard and stepped through a reinforced steel door cut into a half-meter-thick wall.

The bored and half-frozen guard usually exchanged a few sentences with him, but he clammed up under Vladimir’s gaze and didn’t even acknowledge James’s nod.

Once James was out of the compound, he zipped his jacket and pulled up the collar to ward off the cold. For the purposes of this mission, James lived in an apartment block six kilometers away with a fake aunt and uncle. They were posing as weapons dealers who wanted to buy missiles from Denis Obidin. In reality they both worked for MI5.

A bus ran into town from a stop half a kilometer from Obidin’s house, but Aero City’s transportation was erratic. The wait for a bus in subzero temperatures was unbearable, and on the odd occasion when a bus actually turned up, it was filled with cigarette smoke and mean-tempered pensioners with vile coughs. Running home was the healthier option and it meant James would still be in decent physical shape when he returned to CHERUB campus.

The first part of James’s run took him along a gloomy road, with little traffic and trees packed along each side. He loved this section of his daily run home, with the crisp air and the smell of pine needles. The trees ended when he reached factory seven. A kilometer and a half long, the massive hangar had once employed thirty-five thousand workers who turned out a three-hundred-seat airliner every ten days.

It had been graffitied and vandalized in the years after closing, but most young families had left Aero City in search of work and taken the city’s delinquent teens with them. The only life James had ever seen around the plant were a few homeless boys who lived rough in an abandoned apartment block. They sniffed glue inside the dilapidated remains of a cargo plane and occasionally kicked a half-inflated soccer ball around inside the hangar.

Once he was sure nobody was about, James stopped running and sat on a concrete step with his back against a fire door that had been taken off its hinges, probably to be burned as firewood. He slid the communicator out of his pocket and checked his messages.

The first was from his girlfriend back at CHERUB campus:

HAPPY 15TH BIRTHDAY.

MISS U

LOVE U

COME BACK SOON!

HOPE IT’S NOT 2 COLD.

KERRY.

James had heaps of other birthday messages from friends on campus and even a message from his handler, Meryl Spencer. The oldest unread message was from his sister, Lauren. It had been sent the evening before:

HAPPY BDAY 4 2MORO SCUMBAG!

SORRY THIS IS EARLY. MR LARGE IS

HIKING EXPEDITION.

Dynamic adventure
By Dmitry
Robert Muchamore is a brilinat teenage writer. He has written a lot of great books. Two most popular are his "Henderson's boys" and "The CHERUB" series. The CHERUBs are about a branch of the British Intelligence service who uses children under the age of seventeen as agents. These books are all very dynamic and breathtaking but I will talk about one - number seven: "The Fall".
This is a very exciting book which starts in the NorthWest of Russia resulting in a death of two MI 5 agents leaving James under a lot of stress. When an investigation arises James has to work out who is lying and who is not and the result maybe horrific. If you liked this review and you are now interested in "The CHERUB" series then I would suggest starting with the first book - "The Recruit".

Parents, know what your kids are reading.
By Mom of 2
My son has enjoyed this series but I have discovered these books aren't what they seem. I *thought* they were in the same vein as Alex Rider -- you must check out the wiki page for this book. It's touted as a children's book but has scenes of sex & rape. Sorry, not for my 12 yr. old. Another lesson for this mom to be more aware of what my child is reading.

I learned more from this book than the 15 months of hands-on Tech training and their book. The detail of nearly every detail expanded my ideas greatly. Turned out to be one of the best text books I've ever used. I tried talking the school into using this as the text book for the class, but they claim to have had a contract from a distributor.

Wynema: A Child of the Forest, by S. Alice Callahan

Originally published in 1891, Wynema is the first novel known to have been written by a woman of American Indian descent. Set against the sweeping and often tragic cultural changes that affected southeastern native peoples during the late nineteenth century, it tells the story of a lifelong friendship between two women from vastly different backgrounds—Wynema Harjo, a Muscogee Indian, and Genevieve Weir, a Methodist teacher from a genteel Southern family. Both are firm believers in women’s rights and Indian reform; both struggle to overcome prejudice and correct injustices between sexes and races. Callahan uses the conventional traditions of a sentimental domestic romance to deliver an elegant plea for tolerance, equality, and reform.

Review
“Callahan takes on the role of a ‘woman word warrior,’ creating ‘strong-hearted,’ intelligent heroines and sensitive heroes who educate her audience about Muscogee culture, Indians’ and women’s rights, and the mutual respect between the sexes essential to happy marriages.”—A. LaVonne Brown Ruoff, from the introduction (A. LaVonne Brown Ruoff)

A piece of history
By Ichabod
This book is considered to be the first novel written by a Native American woman, Sophia Alice Callahan, who was the daughter of a Muscogee father and a EuroAmerican mother. Originally published in 1891, this 1997 reprint includes an explanatory introduction by a literature scholar as well as biographical material about Callahan, who was about 23 when she wrote it and 26 when she died. "Wynema" tells the story of a young Indian child who becomes the student and then friend of a white missionary woman. Through this structure, Wynema grows up and learns about the world, but also teaches her white mentors. Together, they learn about each other's cultures and advocate for women's rights and Native American rights. Through her characters, Callahan criticizes U.S. Indian policies and the massacre at Wounded Knee Creek, an actual event that occurred in 1891. This was Callahan's first publication, and it shows. It is at times inconsistent and melodramatic, but at others, compelling and heartbreaking. So don't read it because you want an excellent novel, because it is not. If you want to read an historic artifact and to experience the viewpoint of a young woman who had very clear opinions about the state of the two worlds she inhabited, then get it.
