A concentrated overview of photosynthesis
By Dr. Lee D. Carlson
It is perhaps a cliche to say that the process of photosynthesis is the most important one on Earth. Taking advantage of an essentially inexhaustible source of photons, photosynthesis is a highly complex sequence of physical events, with its evolutionary origins only recently explained. This monograph gives a comprehensive overview of photosynthetic system, and is one of the few that includes discussion of its molecular biology. The genetic engineering of the chloroplast is now of great interest, and is being done by many researchers. Readers who want to understand these developments will find a good start in this book. In addition, there has been a growing interest in being able to emulate photosynthesis in non-biological systems. Called `artificial photosynthesis', it would replicate or perhaps improve on the natural photosynthetic system, a prospect that has tremendous technological implications. In addition, the physics behind photosynthesis is discussed at an elementary level in the book, and would be suitable for readers who want to understand the physical processes but without getting into the details. A more detailed discussion would require a discussion of the physics of `excitons', which can involve advanced mathematics, more than this book wants to provide. Unfortunately the book does not discuss how the photosynthetic apparatus evolved, but this is a recent topic that was still pretty much an open question at the time of its publication.

Every topic in the book is fascinating, but for this reviewer the chapter on the molecular biology of the photosynthetic system stood out among the rest. One learns of how the chloroplasts contain DNA that replicates independently of other parts of the genome. This is called `chloroplastic DNA (cpDNA)' and codes for certain proteins, a list of which is given in the chapter. It is interesting to note that chloroplasts supposedly originated as prokaryotic endosymbionts, but as the author explains, many of the original symbiont genes were transferred to the nuclear genome. Their function was then replaced by new mechanisms in the chloroplasts. Chloroplast genes can be activated by light. Called in the book `photogenes', when illuminated they result in increases in transcripts and protein products. A list of light activated genes of the chloroplast and their products are given in this chapter.

In this chapter, the author also points out some open problems that require further research, such as the mechanism behind the proteolysis of the D1 protein in photosystem II. Another open question regards finding the explanation as to why different species of plants have wide variations in their response to light, with genes in some species showing both low and normal response to light, whereas in another showing no low light response. The author's tentative explanation for these differences is that they originate in the context of the ecological behavior of the plants. The sensitivity to light may give an advantage when seedlings are attempting to reach the soil surface or are in deep shade. It would not be advantageous to initiate the photosynthetic reactions fully until sufficient light is available.

That the nuclear and chloroplast genomes are not independent is readily clear from the discussions in this chapter on their interaction. The author gives a detailed diagram illustrating how they interact in terms of their gene products and their incorporation into the chloroplast compartments. The role of phytochrome in the regulation of gene expression is emphasized throughout this discussion. The author also discusses the `chloroplast factor', which is a mechanism for passing information to the nucleus that the chloroplast is ready to receive a protein.

This short review does not even scratch the surface of the many topics that are discussed in this book. Indeed, the apparatus of photosynthesis is extremely complex and one must spend a fair amount of time in attempting to understand it with a reasonable scale of detail. Many references are given for those readers who intend to gain an even more detailed understanding of photosynthesis. The time spend reading and studying this book is well worth it, even if one does not intend to specialize in research in photosynthesis, but rather has an intense curiosity to fathom what is certainly one of the most fascinating of physical systems to evolve on this planet.

Human Heart, Cosmic Heart: A Doctor's Quest to Understand, Treat, and Prevent Cardiovascular Disease, by Dr. Thomas Cowan

While serving with the Peace Corps in Swaziland, Thomas Cowan encountered the work of Rudolf Steiner and Weston A. Price - two men whose ideas would fascinate and challenge him for decades to come. Both drawn to the art of healing and repelled by the way medicine was-and continues to be-practiced in the United States, Cowan returned from Swaziland, went to medical school, and established a practice. He remained intrigued by the work of Price and Steiner and, in particular, with Steiner's provocative claim that the heart is not a pump. Dr. Cowan believes that Steiner was correct that the heart is not a pump, and our understanding of heart disease is completely wrong. And this gross misunderstanding is the reason heart disease remains the most common cause of death worldwide.

Review

"There’s only a few books a year that I think really deserve to be in everyone’s library. This is one of them. . . . It’s loaded with great information, and it can save your life or the life of someone you love.”--Dr. Joseph Mercola, founder and director, mercola.com

Foreword Reviews-

"Heart disease is a national crisis, and the most common treatments don’t lower the risk of death in most cases. Rather than despair, Thomas Cowan meets these devastating realities with the firm belief that there must be another solution. Through many years of research and medical practice, he challenges the common notion of what the heart is for―to pump blood. Through observation, geometry, and scientific insight, he proposes that the heart is a hydraulic ram rather than pump because it uses suction rather than force to build the momentum of the blood. And he makes it clear that this change of perspective makes all the difference by exploring heart attacks, what they aren’t and what they are. The treatment Cowan advises in Human Heart, Cosmic Heart is personal and holistic (whole-body remedies), driven by the patient’s own life story in order to show the whole of the nervous system. The result is a refreshingly balanced approach focused on responding to the needs of the body rather than reacting to the problem experienced in the heart. Throughout the book, Cowan shares his personal journey of learning, making the book approachable and warm as well as logical and authoritative. By sharing his learning process, he conveys a deep understanding of the cardiovascular system and its needs. Cowan, a self-proclaimed doubter and nonconformist, brings a voice of skepticism and hope into a genre packed with dry, black-and-white thinking. His insights are relentlessly rooted in research, and he explains medical science in an accessible way, including clear diagrams and step-by-step explanations that move at just the right pace for educated adults without moving too slowly for medical professionals. This book is life-changing for those trying to understand their own bodies, or those of loved ones, and it’s truly transformative in the hands of medical professionals, especially young doctors.”

“This book blew my mind. I will admit . . . I thought I was simply going to be reading an interesting memoir of a good physician. Instead, I discovered the most groundbreaking, unorthodox, outside-the-box treatise on the heart I have ever stumbled upon. If you have a heart and you want to live a long time, you must, must read this book.”--Ben Greenfield, author of the New York Times bestseller, Beyond Training; founder and owner, Greenfield Fitness Systems; www.bengreenfieldfitness.com

“What happens when the medical profession views the heart as a mechanical pump? We get ghoulish surgeries, medications with horrible side effects, and soulless low-fat diets. Tom Cowan asks us to look anew at the heart; first step is the demonstration that the blood pumps the heart, not vice versa. From this observation comes a way of treating heart disease that is more effective, more gentle, more felicitate than conventional protocol. Part biography, part wisdom, part practical advice, Human Heart, Cosmic Heart will change the way you look at the process of healing and the miraculous world of the human body.”--Sally Fallon Morell, President, The Weston A. Price Foundation

illuminating and inspiring
By Timothy D. Lundeen
Dr Cowan interleaves stories of his life with what he's learned about health, healing, and the heart. His stories take us with him on his journey, from childhood experiences with tachycardia and heart irregularities, through his stint in the Peace Corp, the surprising and transformative experience of discovering the works of both Weston Price and Rudolph Steiner while living in Africa, his experience with anthroposophical medicine, and his continual search for how to help people truly heal (instead of just treating symptoms).

I’ve been working on my own health for years now, and have come to many of the same conclusions as Dr Cowan. I expect his prescription for a healthy diet and lifestyle will help the people who follow it, as I’ve seen the results first-hand.

But I also found much that was new to me, from an exploration of how the structure of the heart is shaped by its function, ideas about how the heart really works and integrates with blood transport, a description of the mechanics of heart attacks that is very different from mainstream concepts, but which makes total sense and fits with everything else I’ve learned. The book speaks to more than the mechanics of how our bodies work, also talking about our spiritual nature and our connections to other people and the nature that surrounds us. The book leads naturally to more questions, and new paths to explore, and I am much indebted for these signposts!

Highly recommended.

More a memoir than a manual. Needs more substance.
By Kyle William
I decided to purchased Human Heart, Cosmic Heart after hearing Dr. Cowan on one of my favorite podcasts. After blazing through a relatively short read, this book comes up empty on many fronts, confusing itself as a pseudo memoir over informative pulp.

As someone that suffers from high cholesterol and a family history of heart disease, I was exited to read this as I've always been a fan of alternative thinking when it comes to medicine (I use the word alternative not so much as a replacement for homeopathic, but in a sense that more "modern" treatment thinking tends to be more effective). Unfortunately, I felt the ~120 pages of this book came up empty.

What I loved about this book:
-Dr. Coawn's thoughts on hydrophilic tubes and how the heart isn't a pump is fascinating. Truly cutting edge thinking and I hope that more research is dedicated towards the idea that our circulatory system is really a series of hydrophilic tubes.

-The book is a short, easy read.

What I didn't like about this book:
-The book never really figures out what it is trying to accomplish. It can be a memoir at times, it can branch out into extraordinarily philosophical exploration, and finally it can be, albeit brief, a manual for healthy living. Outside of one single supplement and one single alternative treatment method, there is no real plan on fixing a diseased or broken heart.

-Dr. Cowan sometimes goes...really...really...far out in his thinking. There are whole chapters dedicated to the fact that we should think of the earth in geocentric terms instead of the almost universally accepted understanding that the sun is the center of our solar system. The author also spends a chapter trying understand gold and the human obsessions associated with it. These feel like utter distractions from whatever lost thesis Dr. Cowan is trying to explore and unfortunately consume the latter half of the book.

-The book, in my opinion, completely lacks a "so what." There really isn't a conclusion and Dr. Cowan spends the final chapter contemplating why heart transplant recipients often receive the feelings of their deceased donors. This is interesting, but the author spends no time trying to scientifically explain what his thought process is, which is what it felt like throughout most of the book.

Don't get me wrong, listening to Dr. Cowan on the podcast convinced me he is a deeply intelligent doctor. Unfortunately, his thoughts are completely unorganized in this text and perhaps could have used a better editor.

DO NOT buy this book if you're looking for a guide/manual/instruction on a sick or diseased heart. You'll find yourself just as confused as I am trying to understand why you just read about the geographic and acute angles of the heart as an organ, why there are poor people in the world, and how the author's lifelong curiosity with gold will somehow heal or abate your ailments.

Huey

Huey "Piano" Smith's musical legacy stands alongside that of fellow New Orleans legends Dr. John, Fats Domino, Ernie K-Doe, and Allen Toussaint. His 1957 classic, "Rocking Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu," made Billboard's top R&B singles chart, and hundreds of artists including Aerosmith, the Grateful Dead, the Beach Boys, Johnny Rivers, and Chubby Checker have recorded his songs.

The first biography of the artist responsible for hits "Don't You Just Know It," "High Blood Pressure," and "Sea Cruise," Huey "Piano" Smith and the Rocking Pneumonia Blues follows the musician's extraordinary life from his Depression-era childhood to his teen years as a pianist for blues star Guitar Slim to his mainstream success in the 1950s and '60s. Drawing from extensive interviews and court records, author and journalist John Wirt also provides new insights on Smith's professional disappointments and financial struggles in the 1980s and '90s as he battled over royalties from his most successful and profitable work.

An enigmatic and guarded personality in a profession of extroverted performers, Smith made farreaching contributions to the New Orleans music scene as a songwriter, pianist, and producer. Wirt reveals that Smith's numerous collaborations with other artists -- including the Clowns, the Pitter Pats, the Hueys, and Shindig Smith and the Soul Shakers -- served as vehicles for his creative vision rather than simply as an anonymous backup for a leading front man.

Throughout this intimate account, Wirt details Smith's significant impact on rock and roll history and underscores both the longevity of his music -- which has entertained and inspired for over five decades -- and the musician's personal endurance in the face of hardship and opposition.

By Nat Speir
I am a Southerner, 70 years of age and I have played R&B my whole life. I know something of the great Huey Smith and the pivotal music played
at Cosimo's in the 50's-early 60's. I enjoyed the book- But, it is heavily weighted in the direction of "an artist's legal problems, and the unfairness of the record industry". Of course Huey's situation is unfortunate, even worse than Allan Freed taking writers credit on The Moonglows records, etc. Still, as a musician I would like to have read more about the great Huey Smith's piano playing. Next to Professor Longhair, Huey was the man- capable of chord voicings and keyboard ideas beyond Fat's and all the others.

Great book about a great artist that really got screwed by the music biz....what a shame...the 50s were tough times, but also brought us the greatest music in American history, and Huey is a major player in that...
Thank you for bringing his story to our attention...thank you Mr. Wirt, and thank you Huey for your contribution to American music and New Orleans R& B.

Well-researched, entertaining bio of an influential R&B pioneer
By Todd Baptista
This 243-page paperback brings Huey "Piano" Smith out of the shadows for the first time in a well-researched, entertaining, and informative narrative of his early years, his career as a songwriter and recording and performing artist, the lack of proper financial compensation, and the lengthy, painful lawsuits that ultimately paid the biggest dividends for people other than Smith. Fans and historians finally get a chance to learn about Clowns' alumni "Scarface" John Williams, Gerri Hall, Curley Moore, Roosevelt Wright, Francis Eugene Harris, and Bobby Marchan from their humble beginnings until, in some cases, their tragic deaths. While I would have enjoyed seeing some additional images reproduced of the Clowns (Williams' daughter has recently posted several online) and a discography with personnel tackled, this is a well-written and edited effort that does justice to Huey Smith's musical legacy.

Agile Estimating and Planning, by Mike Cohn

Praise for Agile Estimating and Planning

"Traditional, deterministic approaches to planning and estimating simply don't cut it on the slippery slopes of today's dynamic, change-driven projects. Mike Cohn's breakthrough book gives us not only the philosophy, but also the guidelines and a proven set of tools that we need to succeed in planning, estimating, and scheduling projects with a high uncertainty factor. At the same time, the author never loses sight of the need to deliver business value to the customer each step of the way."

—Doug DeCarlo, author of eXtreme Project Management: Using Leadership, Principles and Tools to Deliver Value in the Face of Volatility (Jossey-Bass, 2004)

"We know how to build predictive plans and manage them. But building plans that only estimate the future and then embrace change, challenge most of our training and skills. In Agile Estimating and Planning , Mike Cohn once again fills a hole in the Agile practices, this time by showing us a workable approach to Agile estimating and planning. Mike delves into the nooks and crannies of the subject and anticipates many of the questions and nuances of this topic. Students of Agile processes will recognize that this book is truly about agility, bridging many of the practices between Scrum and ExtremeProgramming."

—Ken Schwaber, Scrum evangelist, Agile Alliance cofounder, and signatory to the Agile Manifesto

"In Agile Estimating and Planning , Mike Cohn has, for the first time, brought together most everything that the Agile community has learned about the subject. The book is clear, well organized, and a pleasant and valuable read. It goes into all the necessary detail, and at the same time keeps the reader's burden low. We can dig in as deeply as we need to, without too much detail before we need it. The book really brings together everything we have learned about Agile estimation and planning over the past decade. It will serve its readers well."

—Ron Jeffries, www.XProgramming.com, author of Extreme Programming Installed (Addison-Wesley, 2001) and Extreme Programming Adventures in C# (Microsoft Press, 2004)

" Agile Estimating and Planning provides a view of planning that's balanced between theory and practice, and it is supported by enough concrete experiences to lend it credibility. I particularly like the quote 'planning is a quest for value.' It points to a new, more positive attitude toward planning that goes beyond the 'necessary evil' view that I sometimes hold."

—Kent Beck, author of Extreme Programming Explained, Second Edition (Addison-Wesley, 2005)

"Up-front planning is still the most critical part of software development. Agile software development requires Agile planning techniques. This book shows you how to employ Agile planning in a succinct, practical, and easy-to-follow manner."

—Adam Rogers, Ultimate Software

"Mike does a great follow-up to User Stories Applied by continuing to provide Agile teams with the practical approaches and techniques to increase agility. In this book, Mike provides time-proven and well-tested methods for being successful with the multiple levels of planning and estimating required by Agile. This book is the first to detail the disciplines of Agile estimating and planning, in ways that rival my 1980 civil engineering texts on CPM Planning and Estimating."

—Ryan Martens, President and Founder, Rally Software Development Corporation

"With insight and clarity, Mike Cohn shows how to effectively produce software of high business value. With Agile estimation and planning, you focus effort where it really counts, and continue to do so as circumstances change."

"Finally! The groundbreaking book my clients have been clamoring for! Agile Estimating and Planning demystifies the process of defining, driving, and delivering great software that matters to the business. Mike's clarity, insight, and experience leap out through every page of this book, offering an approach that is relevant and immediately useful to all members of an Agile project."

—Kert D. Peterson, President, Enterprise Agile Group, LLC

"This isn't yet another generic book on Agile software development. Agile Estimating and Planning fills a gap left by most of the other books and gives you important, practical, down-to-earth techniques needed to be successful on Agile development projects."

—Steve Tockey, Principal Consultant, Construx Software

"Estimation, planning, and tracking is a trinity. If you don't do one of them, you don't need the other two. This book provides very practical knowledge for estimation, planning, prioritizing, and tracking. It should be compulsory subject matter for project managers and their teams, even if they hesitate to call themselves Agile."

—Niels Malotaux, Project Coach

"Effective planning is an important, but often misunderstood, part of any successful Agile project. With Agile Estimating and Planning , Mike Cohn has given us a definitive guide to a wide range of Agile estimating and planning practices. With his clear and practical style, Mike not only explains how to successfully get started planning an Agile project, but also provides a wealth of tips and advice for improving any team's Agile planning process. This book is a must-read for managers, coaches, and members of Agile teams."

More importantly, he has a great mix of concepts with real-world examples finished off with a case study so the reader can relate the information to their own situation. Unless you are already an expert Agile planner and estimator, this book is for you."

—Alan Shalloway, CEO, Senior Consultant, Net Objectives, and coauthor of Design Patterns Explained, Second Edition (Addison-Wesley, 2005)

"Although I had plenty of XP experience before trying out Mike Cohn's Agile planning practices, the effectiveness of the practical and proven techniques in this book blew me away! The book recognizes that people, not tools or processes, produce great software, and that teams benefit most by learning about their project and their product as they go. The examples in the book are concrete, easily grasped, and simply reek of common sense. This book will help teams (whether Agile or not) deliver more value, more often, and have fun doing it! Whether you're a manager or a programmer, a tester or a CEO, part of an Agile team, or just looking for a way to stamp out chaos and death marches, this book will guide you."

—Lisa Crispin, coauthor of Testing Extreme Programming (Addison-Wesley, 2003)

"Mike Cohn does an excellent job demonstrating how an Agile approach can address issues of risk and uncertainty in order to provide more meaningful estimates and plans for software projects."

—Todd Little, Senior Development Manager, Landmark Graphics

"Mike Cohn explains his approach to Agile planning, and shows how 'critical chain' thinking can be used to effectively buffer both schedule and features. As with User Stories Applied, this book is easy to read and grounded in real-world experience."

—Bill Wake, author of Refactoring Workbook (Addison-Wesley, 2003)

"Mike brings this book to life with real-world examples that help reveal how and why an Agile approach works for planning software development projects. This book has great breadth, ranging from the fundamentals of release planning to advanced topics such as financial aspects of prioritization. I can see this book becoming an invaluable aid to Agile project managers, as it provides a wealth of practical tips such as how to set iteration length and boot-strap velocity, and communicate progress."

—Rachel Davies, Independent Consultant

"There has been a need for a solid, pragmatic book on the long-term vision of an Agile Project for project managers. Agile Estimating and Planning addresses this need. It's not theory—this book contains project-tested practices that have been used on Agile projects. As Mike's test subjects, we applied these practices to the development of video games (one of the most unpredictable project environments you can imagine) with success."

—Clinton Keith, Chief Technical Officer, High Moon Studios

"When I first heard Mike Cohn speak, I was impressed by a rare combination of qualities: deep experience and understanding in modern iterative and Agile methods; a drive to find and validate easy, high-impact solutions beyond the status quo of traditional (usually ineffective) methods; and the passion and clarity of a natural coach. These qualities are evident in this wonderful, practical guide. I estimate you won't be disappointed in studying and applying his advice."

—Craig Larman, Chief Scientist, Valtech, and author of Applying UML and Patterns, Third Edition (Prentice Hall, 2005) and Agile and Iterative Development (Addison-Wesley, 2004)

" Agile Estimating and Planning is a critical guide on how to successfully provide value to customers of IT services. This book is filled with clear examples that are essential—from project team members to the executive level."

—Lou Thomas, Director, Applications Development, Farm Credit Services of America

"This work is deeply significant in that it articulates and details structured techniques to realize a simple, but profound insight—planning is an iterative quest for value, rather than a perfunctory scheduling of activities. Mike presents processes to converge on this value while reducing risk and uncertainty, supporting decision making, establishing trust, and conveying information. Agile methodologies have shifted the emphasis from plans to planning, but have glossed over many of the finer details of Agile planning. Now, very simply and accessibly, Mike demonstrates how it can be done."

—Sanjiv Augustine, Practice Director, Lean-Agile Consulting at CC Pace, and author of Managing Agile Projects (Prentice Hall, 2005)

"The techniques described in Agile Estimating and Planning have helped us tremendously with planning and managing our projects. It provides all you have ever wanted to know about Agile project management."

This is a 'must-have' book that presents clear, unambiguous, and practical advice for anyone who wants to successfully manage modern software development projects."

—Scott W. Ambler, President, Ambysoft Inc.

"How do your projects go? Frustrating changes? Uncertainty? Product missing both the mark and the deadline? With insight and clarity, Mike Cohn shows how to effectively produce software that is of high business value. With agile estimation and planning, you focus effort where it really counts, and continue to do so as circumstances change."

—Rick Mugridge, Rimu Research Ltd., and lead author of Fit for Developing Software

"We are true believers in the agile methods described in this book, and have experienced a substantially positive impact from their implementation and continued use. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in making their software development more practical and effective."

"Agile Estimating and Planning "is the definitive, practical guide to estimating and planning agile projects. In this book, Agile Alliance cofounder Mike Cohn discusses the philosophy of agile estimating and planning and shows you exactly how to get the job done, with real-world examples and case studies.

Concepts are clearly illustrated and readers are guided, step by step, toward how to answer the following questions: What will we build? How big will it be? When must it be done? How much can I really complete by then? You will first learn what makes a good plan-and then what makes it agile.

Using the techniques in "Agile Estimating and Planning," you can stay agile from start to finish, saving time, conserving resources, and accomplishing more. Highlights include: Why conventional prescriptive planning fails and why agile planning worksHow to estimate feature size using story points and ideal days x2014;and when to use eachHow and when to re-estimateHow to prioritize features using both financial and nonfinancial approachesHow to split large features into smaller, more manageable onesHow to plan iterations and predict your team's initial rate of progressHow to schedule projects that have unusually high uncertainty or schedule-related riskHow to estimate projects that will be worked on by multiple teams

"Agile Estimating and Planning" supports any agile, semiagile, or iterative process, including Scrum, XP, Feature-Driven Development, Crystal, Adaptive Software Development, DSDM, Unified Process, and many more. It will be an indispensable resource for every development manager, team leader, and team member.

This book could have been called Estimating and Planning Agile Projects. Instead, it's called Agile Estimating and Planning. The difference may appear subtle, but it's not. The title makes it clear that the estimating and planning processes must themselves be agile. Without agile estimating and planning, we cannot have agile projects.

The book is mostly about planning, which I view as answering the question of "What should we build and by when?" However, to answer questions about planning we must also address questions of estimating ("How big is this?") and scheduling ("When will this be done?" and "How much can I have by then?").

This book is organized in seven parts and twenty-three chapters. Each chapter ends with a summary of key points and with a set of discussion questions. Because estimating and planning are meant to be whole-team activities, one of the ways I hope this book will be read is by teams who meet perhaps weekly to discuss what they've read and the questions at the end of each chapter. Because agile software development is popular worldwide, I have tried to avoid writing an overly United States-centric book. To that end, I have used the universal currency symbol, writing amounts such as 500 instead of perhaps $500 or €500 and so on.

Part I describes why planning is important, the problems we often encounter, and the goals of an agile approach. Chapter 1 begins the book by describing the purpose of planning, what makes a good plan, and what makes planning agile. The most important reasons why traditional approaches to estimating and planning lead to unsatisfactory results are described in Chapter 2. Finally, Chapter 3 begins with a brief recap of what agility means and then describes the high-level approach to agile estimating and planning taken by the rest of this book.

The second part introduces a main tenet of estimating, that estimates of size and duration should be kept separate. Chapters 4 and 5 introduce story points and ideal days, two units appropriate for estimating the size of the features to be developed. Chapter 6 describes techniques for estimating in story points and ideal days, and includes a description of planning poker. Chapter 7 describes when and how to re-estimate, and Chapter 8 offers advice on choosing between story points and ideal days.

Part III, "Planning for Value," offers advice on how a project team can make sure they are building the best possible product. Chapter 9 describes the mix of factors that need to be considered when prioritizing features. Chapter 10 presents an approach for modeling the financial return from a feature or feature set and how to compare financial returns so that the team works on the most valuable items first. Chapter 11 includes advice on how to assess and then prioritize the desirability of features to a product's users. Chapter 12 concludes this part with advice on how to split large features into smaller, more manageable ones.

In Part IV, we shift our attention and focus on questions around scheduling a project. Chapter 13 begins by looking at the steps involved in scheduling a relatively simple, single-team project. Next, Chapter 14 looks at how to plan an iteration. Chapters 15 and 16 look at how to select an appropriate iteration length for the project and how to estimate a team's initial rate of progress. Chapter 17 looks in detail at how to schedule a project with either a high amount of uncertainty or a greater implication to being wrong about the schedule. This part concludes with Chapter 18, which describes the additional steps necessary in estimating and planning a project being worked on by multiple teams.

Once a plan has been established, it must be communicated to the rest of the organization and the team's progress against it monitored. These are the topics of the three chapters of Part V. Chapter 19 looks specifically at monitoring the release plan, while Chapter 20 looks at monitoring the iteration plan. The final chapter in this part, Chapter 21, deals specifically with communicating about the plan and progress toward it.

Chapter 22 is the lone chapter in Part VI. This chapter argues the case for why agile estimating and planning work and stands as a counterpart to Chapter 2, which describes why traditional approaches fail so often.

Part VII, the final part, includes only one chapter. Chapter 23 is an extended case study that reasserts the main points of this book but does so in a fictional setting.

Draw the Line
By R. Williams
A 5 star review just doesn't mean anything anymore. There are some good ideas in this book, but large stretches of this book are just absurd. This thing reads like homework that was finished on the bus (you can almost see the bumps in the road). The structure of the book is completely haphazard. One minute, we are talking about doing estimates. The next minute we are trying to figure out how a project will pay for itself, then, it's on to how to split up stories that got too big. I was waiting for a sidebar with a recipe for a great chiffon cake. At the end of the chapter on estimating value, the author recommends another book and says that's where his content came from (citational plagiarism is called 'plugging,' Youngster). Then, the chapter on splitting stories made me laugh out loud in places. Things like 'split stories along data lines,' or 'split stories along priority lines' or one of the funniest 'split it along CRUD lines.' Come on.

The good part of this book is the one chapter on estimation and discussion of things like using Fibonacci for bucketing of estimates into story points, the importance of seeing estimates as relative, and the idea of doing planning poker. In short: again, it's an article that was turned into a book by a set of expansion techniques that are astounding for not being illegal, let alone questionable. And all this inside a fortress of testimonials that makes Fort Knox look lightly defended.

The Planning Approach that Refreshes
By Jean Tabaka
Better planning, as Mary Poppendieck (author of "Lean Software Development") points out, results in a higher standard of living for the individual, for the team, and for the organization. With "Agile Estimating and Planning", Mike Cohn delivers a beautifully pragmatic approach for pushing us into the notion that this higher standard of living is completely attainable for our software development projects in this lifetime.

Mike's earlier book, "User Stories Applied" has been one of my most cited books when working with teams new to agile software development. Understanding the usefulness of the story concept as the base unit of function delivery has put these new teams in a good steady stride for being realiably realistic about their work delivery toward feature completion.

With Mike's "AE&P", I now have a fully referenceable guide that moves the team story planning pragmatics to the next level: bringing multiple planning approaches to bear at multiple levels for multiple measures of software feature acceptance and completion. In his usual style, Mike delivers his guidance with wonderfully accessible non-software analogies. For example, "How long is a football game?" and "How long will it take me to move my pile of dirt?" for understanding the distinction between effort (or ideal hours/days)and duration (total calendar hours/days). These simple mental models set the stage for ruthlessly correcting the many misunderstood atrributes of planning and its life partner estimating. Having shattered the myths of task-based Gantt Charts, PERT charts, and Work Breakdown Structures as completely repeatable prediction models for planning and estimation, Mike rebuilds the planning toolbox with practices that truly work. He buoys his practices (such as Planning Poker and frequent replanning) with the de rigueur reinforcements of appropriate metrics (e.g. how many tests did we complete in the last iteration, how many story points did we complete in our worst iteration, how are we tracking today with our estimates of what is left to do) that really guide teams in how to steadily improve their planning acumen.

Because my passion in agile software development has focused more and more on the importance of participatory decision-making in order to make planning commitments stick, I am particularly grateful that Mike sets a high collaborative bar with regard to how team's must work in order to create effective and actionable plans. Guidance on collaboration, high visibility, and continuous inspection are woven into all the practices in Mike's book, start to finish.

If I can leave you with only one piece of advice from "AE&P", take Mike's "Dozen Guidelines for Agile Estimating and Planning" (Chapter 22) and nail them to your team's door. In fact, nail them to your business partner or product manager's door. If you allowed me a second piece of advice: read through his excellent case study that follows in Chapter 23. And then, if you forgave me one final piece of advice: be prepared to start enjoying your new standard of living.

Pactical, Easy read. Answers what, why and how.
By Animikh Sen
The book is well structured and easy to read. In my humble opinion, it comes with a strong "buy" rating for any Agile practitioner or a current PMI certified person who wants to contribute to the knowledge economy of ever changing requirements. The book is right sized (finish in a coast to coast trip in US). Practical in its content, it provides lots of examples and case studies, from software as well as non software fields to illustrate the concepts. The detailed case study at the end of the book is invaluable.

Several chapters were much thought provoking, specially how to handle team dynamics and cross team estimation. The book did not right fully delve into any details of that, it's a topic for another time.

Part I of the books sets up the context.

Part II details on estimating the size, and the techniques and tools for doing that; in fact it comes with some simple tools, which can be really customized and expanded quickly.

Part III caters to what I call "value add planning" planning the work by prioritizing by business value, The books touches the concepts of financial project analysis, however there are better books for that, and the author provides the references.

Part IV brings in the concept of time, and the handling of "estimating for effort" and estimating for duration" is simply superb. Also an entire chapter is dedicated to Buffering and its need and for multi-team projects.

Part V presents tools and motivations for monitoring and communicating.

Part VI presents why Agile Planning works, and honestly I skipped it, expect the guidelines ( Page 254) which I read to validate my knowledge.

If there is one thing that I would change in the book, it would be the story point example with dogs. It would be a little confusing if you have no idea how a Great Dane would be different from a Duchshund! But hey, I think the book gets the message across very well.

What I would like to see in the second edition-- softcopy of some tools that goes with the book, may be some templates that can be customized...but then again, you should not be in this business unless you are able to cook these tools up yourself !!

Enron (Modern Plays), by Lucy Prebble

'The only difference between me and the people judging me is they weren't smart enough to do what we did.'

One of the most infamous scandals in financial history becomes a theatrical epic. At once a case study and an allegory, the play charts the notorious rise and fall of Enron and its founding partners Ken Lay and Jeffrey Skilling, who became 'the most vilified figure from the financial scandal of the century.'

Mixing classical tragedy with savage comedy, Enron follows a group of flawed men and women in a narrative of greed and loss which reviews the tumultuous 1990s and casts a new light on the financial turmoil in which the world finds itself in 2009.

The play is Lucy Prebble's first work for the stage since her debut work The Sugar Syndrome, winner of the George Devine and Critic's Circle Awards for Most Promising New Playwright. Produced by Headlong, Enron premiered at Chichester's Minerva Theatre on 11 July 2009 and opened at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in September, before transferring to London's West End Jan - May 2010 and to Broadway April 2010.

Piece of crap

Exposes the playwright's laughable understanding of business and economics. Childish and naive. Little substance.

Though it has some value with regards to its artistic and relatively accurate portrayal of its characters.
