Great textbook on the changes in the English language, from past-present

This was the prescribed text in a graduate class I'm taking, and I have found this to be a well-written, clear, and easy to understand text on the history of the English language. The text outlines the history of the English language from pre-Old English times till the present day. There is a concise introduction on the English language, tracing its origins, history, and the internal and external changes that have characterized the language's development. There is also a chapter which focuses on English spelling, sounds, and grammar.

The rest of the text covers the developments of the English language in greater detail, i.e. before Old English, the Old English period (450-1150), from OE to Middle English, the Middle English period (1150-1500), the Early Modern English period (1500-1700), the Modern English period (1700-present), and finally, the varieties of English around the world.

The text may not be comprehensive, but makes an excellent primer for those who are not linguistically-trained, and is practical for students who are taking an introductory course in the history of the English language. The language is easy to understand, the linguistics jargon is sufficient to promote understanding without confusing the reader, and the tables provided in each chapter summarize the main points, making this text easily accessible and user-friendly. I liked the exercises provided at the end of each chapter as the questions promote critical thinking and allow me to test my knowledge of the material I have learned. There are many texts provided for each of the period (not complete texts, but Van Gelderen provides weblinks as to where the full texts may be obtained online).

One criticism is that some of the weblinks provided could not be easily accessed, and this may be due to the fact that this text was written in 2006, and some of the links provided may no longer be active. Also provided are possible/suggested answers to the exercises (not detailed, but useful as a guide to check one's answers), suggestions on how to use the OED (most university students would be able to access the Online OED through their school's portal), and a chronology of historical events pertaining to the English language, as well as a list of references, and an index. Recommended for students who are interested in an introductory primer on the history of the English language.

An excellent book for junior/senior majors in English. A bit too learned for underclassmen/women. I particularly enjoy the work assignments for each chapter: they require as much understanding as knowledge.

Perfect Book

This book is incredibly well-written and readable. It is full of history but never gets boring. The exercises are stimulating and there are tons of great texts. Elly is my professor and couldn't be more brilliant.

Williams evaluates young people in rural and urban contexts and across lines of race, class, gender, and sexual orientation. His approach, which combines sensitive portrayals with sociological analysis, adds a clarifying dimension to the fickle and often frustrating behavior of adolescents. Williams reads between the lines of his subjects' seemingly straightforward reflections on alienation, agency, euphoria, and loss, and investigates how this cocktail of emotions can lead to suicide―or not. About the Author
Terry Williams is a professor of sociology at the New School for Social Research. He specializes in teenage life and culture, drug abuse, crews and gangs, and violence and urban social policy. He is the author of The Con Men: Hustling in New York City (Columbia, 2015); Harlem Supers: The Social Life of a Community in Transition (2015); Crackhouse: Notes from the End of the Line (1993); and The Cocaine Kids: The Inside Story of a Teenage Drug Ring (1989); and is the founder and director of the Harlem Writers Crew Project, a multimedia approach to urban education for center city and rural youths.

A Haunting Book

Teenage Suicide Notes was one of the most haunting books that I have read (possibly ever.) In reading the suicide notes of teens who at least thought, if not attempted or completed suicide, the reader has to journey into a very dark place that thankfully many of us probably won’t understand. It’s not that the analysis is so jarring because most of us can live with the ideas that lack of acceptance from family and social groups, alienation, questions of identity can lead one to suicide. I also think that most people accept that suicide cuts across socio-economic factors. The jarring part is those notes…

The notes personalize it. They make you feel like you’re in the room and on some level you are forced to wonder what does it say about us as a society that we have thousands of kids like this in the United States and many of us wouldn’t even know it or worse wouldn’t even care. The conclusions or solutions drawn from this book are nothing that any reasonably intelligent person wouldn’t draw, but maybe the fact that we haven’t says something about us.

Having the kids tell their stories or journals in the case of those who committed suicide really helped jar this reader who has perhaps become a little too jaded towards this cold, cynical world.

Sad, but with an overall sense of hope

3.5 stars rounded up to 4. You know going in that this will be a tough read. Teenage suicide is on the rise. Hopefully this book can help teach a parent or friend what to look and could even give a teen some hope that things will get better. There are 10 case studies here. 8 are notes and interviews with teens and their families who attempted suicide. The other 2 stories are notes and interviews with the families of 2 teens who successfully committed suicide. It's a sad read, but there is hope.

The century saw the triumph of steam power and the transformation of a little-known corner of England into the manufacturing centre of the world. It saw, too, the introduction of the factory system, which brought some men un-dreamed of fortunes and degraded thousands more into abject wretchedness. But though life for the great army of industrial workers seemed at times little more than `eating, drinking, sleeping and dying', hope never died and a resolute determination to sweep away harsh and often barbarous living and working conditions gave birth to a whole range of reforming forces. The Cooperative and teetotal movements began in Lancashire; church life powerfully influenced the masses; and Chartism, besides drawing attention to a disjointed society, provided a training for scores of future trade unionists and working-class politicians. No less interesting is the story of middle-class reformers who built model mills, founded the Anti-Corn-Law League, promoted mechanics' institutes and campaigned for a better social system. The sports and pastimes of the age provide an entertaining section of the book. There are chapters on such varied topics as ballooning, wagering, music, cheap trips, seaside holidays, pleasure gardens and games.

Rebolledo and Rivera, who teach Spanish at the University of New Mexico, offer an intriguing but ultimately unsatisfying collection of poetry and prose by Mexican-American women. An excellent introduction provides a critical overview and helps put the pieces in their historical and literary context. The works reflect the development of a Chicana consciousness from its first seeds until the present. A section on "foremothers" collects oral and written pieces dating back to the 19th century. In one, from 1877, an aged widow recalls the deviously charitable way some priests got her a job. Sandra Cisneros, Alma Villanueva and Gloria Anzaldua provide numerous selections each, as do up-and-coming writers, such as Ines Hernandez or Marina Rivera, who offers a meditation on what it means to be of mixed blood. The title comes from Bernice Zamora's fine Whitmanesque poem about the infinitely divisible nature of identity. The pieces, however, are far too brief; most are mere snippets. Thus the editors merely whet the appetite but fail in their intention to make available hard-to-find Chicana literature.

While researching a history of Chicana literature, editors Rebolledo and Rivero (Spanish, Univ. of New Mexico and Univ. of Arizona, respectively) discovered a wealth of feminist texts that characterize Chicana literature and culture. This collection, which includes 178 texts by 56 women, is organized historically and thematically. The first chapter includes early narratives from both oral and written traditions. Later chapters focus on personal identity, relationships within the community, and archetypes and myths. Authors include Gloria Anzaldua, Denise Chavez, Sandra Cisneros, Margarita Cota Cardenas, Pat Mora, and Antonia Quantana Pigno. Introductory essays set the tone for each new chapter, and extensive footnotes are included. Texts originally in Spanish are presented in both Spanish and English. This anthology will take its place in academic libraries with serious Hispanic American collections.

A Fine Sampler

Another gem of the Oxford World's Classics series, Crossley-Holland's anthology presents a generous selection of poetry and prose covering the major genres of Anglo Saxon Lit. All the famous stuff is here -- Seafarer, Wanderer, Battle of Maldon,etc -- including a very fine Beowulf translation that's highly readable without straying far from the literal meaning of the original. Plus riddles, laws, sections of the Chronicle -- quite enough to get a rounded picture of this fascinating literature, and all well translated. The scholarly notes are sparse but adequate for an intro-level text. If I could make one suggestion for improvement, it would be to add the Anglo-Saxon versions in a bilingual edition, so readers could have the sound and structure of the originals.

beautiful renderings of the elegies

I bought this book in an old edition paperback form in Dublin because it contained the major elegies such as the Wanderer and the Seafarer. I ended up being extremely satisifed not only with the beautiful translation of the Wanderer, but with all of the selections and with Crossley-Holland's comments. I was very thrilled to meet him recently at a reading in Seattle, where he was promoting his Arthur trilogy. I'll have to check that out.

Fascinating Reading

I'm a homeschooled student (in 10th grade). I read this book as part of a course on early European history, and have also referred to it while studying the history of the English language. Most of the translations are very accessible to the modern reader on their own, and Mr. Crossley-Holland's insightful commentary clears up those which are more difficult or obscure. Anyone who has a serious interest in the literature and culture of the Anglo-Saxons will not be disappointed in this book.

Finison explores the remarkable rise of Boston cycling through the lives of several participants, including Kittie Knox, a biracial twenty-year-old seamstress who challenged the color line; Mary Sargent Hopkins, a self-proclaimed expert on women's cycling and publisher of The Wheelwoman; and Abbot Bassett, a longtime secretary of the League of American Wheelman and a vocal cycling advocate for forty years. Finison shows how these riders and others interacted on the road and in their cycling clubhouses, often constrained by issues of race, class, religion, and gender. He reveals the challenges facing these riders, whether cycling for recreation or racing, in a time of segregation, increased immigration, and debates about the rights of women.

A delightful and thought provoking history of cycling in 19th century Boston

Excellent book with lots of interesting history about the Boston cycling craze of the 19th century. Slightly mis-titled, it's main focus is actually on racial prejudice and gender attitudes and cycling in this time period. The book's facts all jibe with local lore and family history (my grandparents grew up at the turn of the century in the local neighborhoods the book focuses on).

I learned a lot of great local history and cycling nuggets that I can't help boring my non-riding wife and friends with. I definitely recommend this book to cyclists interested in history.

You should also check out Charles Stevens' "Around the World on a Bicycle". Then sneak in to the Harvard Club of Boston on Commonwealth Ave. for a toast to Albert Pope - it used to be Albert Pope's house!. Quite a crib. Pope was a (or the) major driving force of all things bicycle in Boston. Afterward take a stroll through Mt. Benedict Cemetery in West Roxbury to honor the grave of Pierre Lallement, considered by many to be the inventor of the bicycle (unless you are Italian in which case you know for a fact that it is Leonardo DaVinci, or unless you are British and are rather positive it was actually James Starley, or unless you are Scottish and reckon it was Kirkpatrick Macmillan,...)
