Excellent Beginner Book on HTML and CSS

I like both Head First HTML and CSS as well as Head First HTML5 Programming by Eric and Elisabeth. This book is clearly intended for the beginner, teaching the basics and fundamentals of using HTML and CSS to design web pages. It assumes no experience or pre-existing knowledge on HTML and CSS. It starts you learning from scratch and slowly builds upon that knowledge over the course of the book.

As with all Head First Books, there are lots of images, games, and exercises to help reinforce the information taught in the book. Some people do not like this style of writing, and I will admit it took me some time to get used to it, too. Therefore, although the information presented is top-notch, you may want to thumb through the pages to verify you like the style of writing before making the purchase.

The focus of the book is on teaching HTML and CSS. The book does not help you set-up an environment to create and serve web pages using an HTML Editor and Web Server. Therefore, you will need to look elsewhere for that information. The book does point to some resources at the end of the book ( under things they don't cover ), but you are on your own in finding an editor and installing a web server to view the HTML and CSS. Of course, you may not need a web server depending on your development needs.

Don't expect coverage on advanced HTML and CSS features. Again, the book teaches you the fundamentals and prepares you for more advanced concepts. This is strictly a beginner book and intermediate and advanced web designers and web developers will be bored with the information (unless like me you plan to use this information to teach and guide others).

I highly recommend this book to those completely new to HTML and CSS and those who will enjoy the writing style of the Head First Series of books! After reading this, I highly recommend Head First HTML5 Programming to learn JavaScript and more advanced features in HTML5!

Makes HTML Fun

It is as if a technical manual and Christopher Moore had a baby. It is fun to read and quick to learn. I was making rudimentary web pages in just a couple of days. I had absolutely no previous experience with HTML at all before picking this book up. My experience with webpages and blogging were limited to the free subscription to Wordpress. Now I am about 1/4 of the way into the book and already have a website that I built myself running through a hosting company and up on the web for the world to see. Each day, I learn a little something new and am able to apply it immediately. It is exciting and fun! Even though they say you can go through the entire book without getting a hosting company, I strongly suggest you make the effort necessary to get hooked up to the internet. The lessons come fast and are easy to comprehend and put to action BUT I find it vital to practice each lesson on my own to memorize them thoroughly. That is done by playing with my own website, building different parts of it according to what I am learning in the book. This is where most of my time is spent. Getting MY OWN work loaded up onto my own hosting server then being able to get online and see MY site, written completely from scratch by me is unbelievably satisfying. I am sure that I will be buying other books to get a deeper knowledge of HTML and CSS but this book has completely removed any doubts of my ability to do this. I CAN WRITE HTML and CSS! Very cool!

Good book for newbies and ADHD types...BUT download files COMPLETELY screwed up

REVISION...I'm now working on Chapter 11, and it's an absolute mess. On their website, the files for Chapter 11 are most likely labeled Chapter 12. Other readers have posted in the forum about being confused, and the author just writes back something like "just check the completed files from Chapter 11." I don't think she's listening AT ALL. There are serious issues with the downloads. The .zip files are numbered correctly, but when they expand, the files are NOT labeled in such a way that you can find what you're looking for. I reduced my rating from 5 stars to 3 stars until they do something about it. Otherwise, read on for my previous review.

I'd have to say that this book is amusing to say the least. The authors definitely have a sense of humor, and have presented the information in a way that's got true variety. It's ALL over the place. Which makes it a little hard if you buy the book only to learn the CSS, which is technically jumping in at Chapter 7 or so.

I was formerly a technical trainer with Apple Computer, and we used many of these techniques and creative exercises in our training for tech support agents. Not an endorsement...just an observation.

If you were a brand new user, and used the book start to finish, I would say this is a really good book to start with. It seems to build on exercises and concepts from the beginning. I think the way the information is presented takes longer than other books I've been working through, but it's thorough and makes sure that the reader understands the "how and why."

It acknowledges the fact that we are all not rocket scientists, and that we all have not-so-dumb-questions. I learned HTML back in the mid 1990s, but never kept up with it. So I understand the HTML, but needed to learn more about CSS. I was baffled by the format at first, but after a few chapters, I realized that it was just reinforcing concepts. In a humorous way.

CAVEAT, if you are someone who appreciates structure and likes the "traditional" how-to books...you may have difficulties with this format. My fiancee, a true programmer, purchased one of the books in this series and was extremely frustrated by the non-linear presentation of information. He claims it's because he's anal retentive, because "he's a programmer."

I CAN give the book a great rating on the ability to visually explain concepts like "float" and the "flow" of your web pages. There are comments on every diagram to make sure that the user understands exactly what's happening. I'm only on Chapter 11 now, but I think I'll be able to create the format I'm looking for after completing the book.

The only negative was downloading the files...I downloaded the complete set of files from their website, but it was missing items. Not all exercises are labeled with chapter numbers, so it made it difficult. I did notice that the website also had the files by chapter individually, and perhaps that would work better.

Overall, I'd recommend the book.

Kindle Version Broken

Unlike the other book in the series (EDA for IC Implementation, Circuit Design, and Process Technology) the quality of this Kindle copy is completely broken. The other book seems to be PDF-based, essentially looking like the print version. This is some kind of weird scan transferred to e-book, almost illegible, on web reader and on iPad. The fonts have scanning artifacts and are barely legible. Reads like a bad photocopy. The cover page is a mediocre black-and-white scan. Don't be fooled by the "look inside", which is taken from the hard copy and is a better quality.

Some advice borders on quaint: knowledge of typing and use of computers are becoming critical. Pages feature samples from high school publications that demonstrate concepts from the text. Two quibbles are the almost unreadable small print in some images, and images from the reverse pages that bleed through the scans of student publications. I LIKE THIS BOOK!

In many years of teaching high school English, I taught Journalism for nineteen and wrote occasional news and feature articles for magazines and newspapers. During all those years, I integrated journalistic writing in my English classes as well because it is mostly concise and structured. After I retired from high school teaching, I taught classes of adults whose purpose was to publish their works, and again I used a lot of the principles of journalism. I bought a copy of HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM to help one of my friends who is faced with the daunting task of teaching six classes of twelfth graders who have failed to pass state tests required for graduation. In spite of their circumstances (no diploma without passing the test), the majority are boys and they are very hard to motivate. I suggested that my friend teach a unit on sports writing and sports broadcasting early in the school year. Who can resist all those football action verbs?!!! Your book has excellent guidelines for sports writing, AND the broadcasting can double as a speech requirement. It's a win-win for teacher and students. Decent Journalism Text

Just slightly older than the workbook, but it goes along pretty well...Get the workbook to have good reinforcement for high school journalism students. Highly recommend.

You can't go wrong for ONE CENT!

About the Author
James career began at a young age as chef at The Schoolhouse in the Southern Highlands where he had grown up. As head chef at the restaurant, he received the accolade of being one of the youngest chefs ever awarded a Sydney Morning Herald Chef's Hat, at the age of 23. James then worked overseas for a number of years to gain experience in the kitchens of some of the world's best chefs. Biota Dining has become one of the most awarded regional restaurants in NSW. The restaurant went on to win a second hat in its second year in 2012 as well as the Sustainability Award. Its grounds include a substantial kitchen garden, an onsite glasshouse growing local and imported seedlings and a popular monthly farmer's market. James recently opened 12 rooms on Biota's beautiful grounds. All 13 comfortable Scandinavian-style rooms have queen or king beds, modern bathrooms and facilities, and outlooks onto the Biota Dining grounds and gardens.

How to Launch Your Wine Career, by Lia Thach and Brian D Emilio, did not, as I started to read, engage me. My interest in, liking of, and knowledge about wine center around the stuff in the bottle, and how it got that way. I am also repelled by too-cute adjectival modifiers I quickly encountered: the ilk of wickedly cool and awesome -teeny bopper talk. But as I got into the book, I realized it was written by and for grown-ups, and that it had been done well. Thach, now on the faculty of Sonoma State University in its Wine Business Center, had had experience in business and in wine writing and education. D Emilio, now working in human resources for Foster s Wine Estates Americas, has similar experience in and out of the wine trade, including a spell with the Clorox Company (which amuses me for some reason) Both are wine-aware and enamored.

The book reads easily and is very well organized. It realistically considers every detail and alerts the reader to pitsfalls. It includes useful and interesting vignettes describing the livers of wine careerists in various roles. It is weighted toward California, and exclusively American in its purview. Liz Thach, PhD, is a management and wine business professor at Sonoma State University in the Wine Business Institute where she teaches undergraduate and wine MBA programs. She is an award-winning author who has published more than 100 articles and five wine textbooks, including Wine: A Global Business and Wine Marketing & Sales and she obtained the distinction of Master of Wine in 2011. Brian D’Emilio is the director of sales capability at Treasury Wine Estates. Michael Mondavi is a winemaker and the son of Robert Mondavi.

As an HR Director with wine industry experience, I can vouch that this book provides great tips that work to get you experience and education for breaking into and launching a sucessful career in the wine industry.
This is a "one of a kind" guide full of practical advice on how to break into one of the best industries that really works.

This is a very useful book. I was a little concerned that the material would be too US centric whilst reading the first few pages - being based in Australia I was looking for something that would give a good level of general industry information with international relevance. My concern was unfounded as the book is full of ideas, advice and examples of people who have already made it in their area of the wine industry. The examples are US based but are also relevant to an international audience. For me, not having a real mentor in the industry, the insights provided in the book were illuminating and answered a lot of questions that I was struggling to find answers to. The book is also practical, guiding you through the creation of an action plan that will get your wine career moving. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to make a move into the wine industry.

I love this book! It breaks down many sections of the wine industry with clear details on what job descriptions can be, what kind of background or education you might need, what resources you need for the sectors of the industry you are interested in, how to find jobs, and what to do and what not to do. At the end of the book there is a practical section or an "action plan" to help outline the reader's next steps for getting into the wine industry. Besides the resources, my favorite part was reading stories from people in the wine industry. I recommend the book!
