Ok, bit dated
By L. Divine
This is a good reader summarizing relevant Public Health Law issues. However, it's not the most current and given the drastic technological advances and public health law issues raised within the past few years, it's more than overdue for a refresh. Also, it sometimes mentions cases that are foundational but doesn't do case examples for these cases, rather applying the specific test or ruling of the foundational case to others. This just seems odd as you need to understand how and why the test originated in the first place. My only otehr criticism would be that it's WAAAAAY WAAAAY WAAAAY to repetitive of the text book.

Native American Voices: A Reader, by Steve Talbot, Susan Lobo

Perusing Native American Voices, we are presented with a scurry of tribal activity that cautions the Elders to guide the youth, and for the youth to listen and to employ that wisdom with respectful enthusiasm. From the British Domain down through California, piercing the Dakotas, entering the realm of the Iroquois Confederacy and southward. There is the cry of political injustice, and that taking the Tribal Laws of great Native Nations and using them for the benefit of the invading masses is not an act of righteousness.

Excellent for any reader looking for general overview
By A Customer
Native American Voices may be the only volume that emits from "Native Country" encompassing the western hemisphere. From the Inuit and Athapascan near the Polar Rim to the Mapuche and Tierra Del Fuego, this volume winnows articulation from a variety of common dialogues. Often we are presented with great philosophy; sometimes we are greeted with prophacy. But, always there is the warning that the lives of the Native People have been assaulted and drastically altered, and if we, the Native Nations, do not reverse ourselves and adhere to the wisdom and the knowledge of our forefathers, we may, along with "civilization," perish. Perusing Native American Voices, we are presented with a scurry of tribal activity that cautions the Elders to guide the youth, and for the youth to listen and to employ that wisdom with respectful enthusiasm. From the British Domain down through California, piercing the Dakotas, entering the realm of the Iroquois Confederacy and southward, there is the cry of political injustice, and that taking the Tribal Laws of great Native Nations and using them for the benefit of the invading masses is not an act of righteousness. In Native Ameircan Voices we hear the weeping of women and children and the clash of swords as the invading hordes rush to attach a people armed only with kindness. WE are witness to the attack. We are also a spectator in the arena where native multitudes are marched in to be baptized in the name of God. Moments later, the baptized are beheaded. Native American Voices is often a requirement in my classes. The students wonder why there were never taught "this" in American and World History in high school. They, too, worry about the value of life in the future. But, thanks to the labors of special people likeLobo and Talbot, the Native People will not fade into the sunset. On page 477, Philip Deere succinctly states the determination of the Native Nations to continue, "We are a people that are made and placed here for a purpose. Through many struggles, through many years of struggle and sufferings we refuse to die." Highly recommended.

This is a good book. However, if your professor demand the latest version (3rd) and you are hoping buying this 2nd version would save you some money, it's wrong. Some of the readings are identical, other not so much.

13 Men (Kindle Single), by Sonia Faleiro

When 20 year-old Baby returns from Delhi to West Bengal to care for her ailing mother, the people in her village shun her. Her accent is cosmopolitan, her clothes are too revealing, and "she behaves like she has money now," whisper her fellow Santhals, members of one of India's most insular and historically persecuted tribes. But when Baby falls in love with Khaleque, an outsider and a Muslim, rural gossip explodes into shocking violence, and Baby faces a moment beyond anyone's worst fears. Brutally gang-raped by 13 villagers as punishment for loving the wrong man, Baby has nowhere to turn. Her neighbors deny that the crime happened, and Santhal activists, hardened from centuries of repression, rush to her attackers' defense. With her story suddenly on front pages across India, Baby's search for justice comes into terrible conflict with the fate of her people, sparking a tense fight over the tribal right to self-govern in the world's largest democracy.

With 13 Men, journalist Sonia Faleiro, author of the bestseller Beautiful Thing: Inside The Secret World of Bombay's Dance Bars, has written a 21st-century, international heir to In Cold Blood—at once a shocking reconstruction of how an isolated village took brutal revenge on one of its own, and a hard look at the scourge of rape in India. Despite a string of high-profile crimes igniting a national conversation in India about violence against women, reports of rape enrage the public and are then forgotten. Just as Baby's case slipped out of the news, Faleiro traveled to West Bengal, where she conducted dozens of interviews with villagers, politicians, lawyers, activists, and the victim herself. Elegantly written and fearlessly reported, 13 Men investigates one of India's most shocking crimes, taking readers deep into one besieged tribal community in a heart-wrenching, moment-by-moment account of the crime and its aftermath.

EARLY PRAISE FOR 13 MEN

“Sonia Faleiro is becoming a genre in doing what so few are able to or want to, in peeling back layers of the truth in a republic where there are few reliable metrics for measuring it.”

—Adrian Levy, co-author, The Siege: Three Days of Terror Inside the Taj

“If you’re marginalized, poor, and a victim, your individuality tends to get lost. The great merit of this powerful essay is that it never does that: despite her ordeal and through it, Baby remains someone."

"13 Men is a remarkable feat of close reporting recounted through a single narrative that is, in equal measures, lyrical and enthralling."

An unflinching look at a deeply dark subject
By Ken Korczak
The news cycle today is brutal: Shocking reports of monstrous beheadings, people burned alive in cages, entire African villages murdered by militarized thugs.

Well, prepare to have a tad more of your hope for humanity wrung out (if you have any left). This compelling Kindle Single, 13 Men, written by Sonia Faleiro, is a riveting, unflinching piece of long-form journalism looking at the dark and hope-sapping phenomena of gang rape in India.

Faleiro takes apart the complex case of a charming, hardworking, but perhaps headstrong young woman recently returned to live in her remote village in West Bengal, India. She dared to flout centuries old local tribal customs - but paid for it with an even greater corruption of those same traditional moral codes.

The topic is timely, to be sure, noting the recent controversial decision by the government of India to ban a BBC documentary about the gang rape of a New Delhi woman. Debate about this censorship is raging across the Internet and world media.

Gang rapes by roving packs of men has long been a huge problem in India, but the country seems determined to bring this deeply taboo subject out of the darkness into the light of greater public consciousness - a painful process as India's multifaceted, complex and ancient culture lurches into modern times.

Faleiro's 13 Men should serve as a significant contribution to the discussion. With the withering gaze of a journalist determined to get all the facts and capture the complexity of a single case, the author demonstrates how enormously difficult and vexing finding truth and justice can be.

What's involved is not just a clash of cultures, but economic injustice, greedy capitalists, corrupt and/or inept public officials, competing interpretations of laws and customs, illiteracy, alcohol abuse and just the plain-old lack of moral character by certain drifting, good-for-nothing men - and perhaps the women who enable them.

Navigating all this territory and churning it back out into a piece of writing that is clear and concise is no easy task, and I give Fareiro enormous credit for bringing clarity to an almost impossibly muddy issue.

If you have the stomach to confront more of the tragedy, cruelty and heartache of our troubled world, pick up a copy of 13 Men - it's a marvelous piece of journalism on a timely subject that brings much-needed light to a deeply dark issue.

13 Men is a richly researched, poignant, riveting narrative of a brutal gang rape in Subalpur, eastern India. Recounted in the award-winning journalist's characteristically thought-provoking, eloquent style, this one has best-seller stamped all over it.
Unputdownable and highly recommended!

Well worth your time!
By Hengist Pod
Faleiro brings an award-winning journalist's sharp eye for detail to this crisply crafted, evocative account of an alleged gang rape that occurs in a remote hamlet in tribal India.

13 Men is a deeply researched, sensitively rendered narrative of a true-life crime that is anything but straightforward, by far more grey than black and white.

Terrifically engaging and solidly disquieting all at once, this tightly-packed little gem is an important, urgent read that will stay with you long after the last page is turned.

Getting Away with Murder: Benazir Bhutto's Assassination and the Politics of Pakistan, by Heraldo Muñoz

By the lead commissioner of the UN investigation, an authoritative account of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination.

On December 27, 2007, a suicide bomber killed Benazir Bhutto, the former prime minister of Pakistan. Brilliant and charismatic, the head of a political family as important to Pakistani history as the Gandhis in India or the Kennedys in the United States, Bhutto had recently returned from exile to challenge military dictator Pervez Musharraf in a democratic election. In the aftermath of the assassination, some blamed Musharraf; others blamed terrorists linked to the Pakistani security service, the ISI; still others pointed the finger at Bhutto’s own spouse and entourage; and some speculated that it was a lone wolf attack. Though the individuals behind the conspiracy have never been found, in Getting Away with Murder Heraldo Munoz goes further than anyone else to unravel the mystery of Bhutto’s death. Moreover, he explains the unexpected role America played in the tragic events, the byzantine relationship between Pakistan and the United States, and how Bhutto’s assassination impacted world politics. In a country ruled more often by military dictators than by elected governments, Bhutto offered a secular, democratic hope. Arguably one of Pakistan’s most iconic political figures, she became one of the world’s few female heads of government. Her assassination tore the country apart, destabilizing the entire region. Leading the United Nations’ inquiry, Munoz delved into murky world of Pakistani politics and the infamous Bhutto family, awash in charisma and power, controversy and violence. His year-long investigation frames a story of betrayals, corruption, foreign influence, and unsolved political assassinations.

Munoz provides new insight into Bhutto’s unprecedented rise and an unflinching, minute-by-minute narrative of the assassination itself. With impeccable research, Munoz also situates Bhutto in the decades-long history of U.S.-Pakistan relations and the emergence of global terrorism, pinpointing her death as the moment when those relations changed forever.

The result is a gripping narrative of Pakistan’s turbulent political realities and the death of its leading politician.

From Booklist
In 2007, in the midst of an electoral campaign, former Pakistani prime minister Bhutto, returning after her second exile, was assassinated by a suicide bomber. In 2009, Muoz, former Chilean ambassador to the UN, was charged with investigating the assassination—a probe plagued by conspiracy theories, political machinations, and threats to the safety of the investigators. Muoz offers historical perspective, including the contentious relationship between Pakistan and India and the way it contributed to tensions between Russia, China, and the U.S. over issues from nuclear armaments to Islamic fundamentalism. Bhutto, daughter of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, himself assassinated, was a moderate supported by the U.S. and Britain. Muoz details her career, focusing on her last day of campaigning. He highlights questionable police actions after the assassination and concedes the unlikelihood of ever really knowing who killed Bhutto, as the list of enemies was long, from political rivals to the Pakistani Taliban. Though the UN’s final report could not identify the killers, it shone light on troubling actions of the government, intelligence services, and the military in a still tumultuous nation. --Vanessa Bush

Review
“This is a chilling account of deceit, corruption and murder at the highest levels of power in Pakistan, an American ally. A carefully researched and compelling tale of tragedy masked as a government.” (Tom Brokaw)

“Muoz has written a brilliant, incisive and page turning book―the last word on Benazir Bhutto’s assassination. The murder of Benazir Bhutto shook a nation and the world but until now there has never been an authoritative explanation as to how and why she died. Muoz comes closest to identifying those guilty of her untimely and tragic death, guiding us through the enigma and chaos that is Pakistan and the double dealing that sustains the tortured relationship between that country and the United States.” (Ahmed Rashid, author of Pakistan on the Brink: The Future of America, Pakistan, and Afghanistan)

“Like some of history’s other high-profile assassinations, including that of John F. Kennedy, the killing of Benazir Bhutto remains cloaked in rumor, speculation, and suspicion. Heraldo Muoz and his colleagues found skeletons in many closets, smoking guns in many hands…The story of their search makes for a gripping read, but far more valuable are the insights Muoz elicits about the nature of Pakistani society and its political culture.” (Zalmay Khalilzad, former U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan)

“One opens this book to learn more about what lay behind the tragic death of Benazir Bhutto and is immediately drawn into its context―the turbulence of Pakistan’s politics and international relations going back to the foundation of the state. The book is essential reading for all who want to understand more about the state of Pakistan and the fate of one of its most talented daughters.” (Helen Clark, administrator of UNDP and former prime minister of New Zealand)

About the Author
Author of A Solitary War and the award-winning The Dictator’s Shadow, Heraldo Muoz is the United Nations Assistant Secretary General in charge of Latin America and the Caribbean for the United Nations Development Program and the former Chilean ambassador to the United Nations. He lives in New York City.

Too Much But Not Enough
By Robert B. Lamm
Mr. (Ambassador?) Muoz is a distinguished diplomat and I have absolutely no doubt that he is intelligent and sincere. However, this book is all over the place and sheds virtually no light on the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. He starts out by giving a quick summary of the assassination itself and its immediate aftermath; then he goes backwards in time and gives a brief history of the Pakistani political scene; he then goes back and gives a more robust history of Pakistan, including the assassinations of Bhutto's father and several others; then he dissects his UN-sponsored investigation of the assassination - noting several times that his mission was not to find the culprit. The last section of the book is an essay on the strange (and strained) relationship between the US and Pakistan.

While these sections are more or less interesting, the early ones are repetitive and the last one has nothing to do with what I thought the book would be about. Moreover, in most cases, the sections are too detailed to serve as the general overview he seems to seek to achieve, but not nearly detailed enough to give the full story. And the weakest section of the book is the one that discusses the investigation of the assassination, because it told me nothing that I didn't know before (aside from details that I'm not sure I needed to know). As a result, the book is choppy and inconclusive, and it's really not clear why he wrote it - or why he wrote it in this manner.

So, despite his intelligence and sincerity, the book is not what it's supposed to be about and not very good at what it is about, and not worth reading.

I learned a lot
By Dlk
This book taught me a lot about Pakistan's recent history and its political system. The author seems unbiased, without any brief from one faction or the other. The book presents a portrait of a very unstable and dangerous political environment, one where assassination is an all too common solution for political conflict.

An outstanding achievement.
By Muhammad A. Quddus
The book is a case study of how power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Everybody, in this corruption, is rotten to the core. A 'mutilated and mangled' Pakistan begins with corruption. Within five years of its birth, Pakistan had a murder in its hand. The very first prime minister is murdered. He is murdered in 1951 in exactly the same location where Ms. Bhutto was to be murdered in 2007. In 1951, there was no fanfare in the murder. No water truck was ordered to hose down the scene of the murder. And there was no quest to look for truth. What took place in 1951 took place again in 2007. The only difference was that the doctor who operated on Ms. Bhutto was not the same doctor. He was the son of the doctor. How do these people live? How do these people make their peace with themselves in the midst of lies and deceit? They say they pray to Allah. If their entire lives consist of lies, don't they lie in front their favorite deity: the Allah? Pakistan owes the writer Mr. Heraldo Munoz a standing ovation.
