About the Author
Ali Almossawi is the creator and maintainer of An Illustrated Book of Bad Arguments, which has been read by 2.4 million readers and translated into 17 languages, 11 of which were done by volunteers from across the world. Almossawi formerly worked on the Firefox team at Mozilla and is an alumnus of MIT's System Design and Management program and Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science. Previous stints included working as a research associate at Harvard and as a collaborator with the MIT Media Lab.

Good book, covers interesting concepts well, but is perhaps not perfect for folks completely new to algorithms

Like his previous book, Almossawi has a great idea for an approachable take on a complex topic but slightly misses the mark. The algorithmic concepts covered in Bad Choices are appropriate, but the emphasis is often more appropriate for computer science graduates than for what I think is the target audience. Use of log-log graphs is a reasonably good idea but makes all of the graphs confusing if you miss the single footnote where it's mentioned but not explained.

Some of the stories (the necklace for describing linked lists) make a certain amount of sense but would have been much improved with easy changes. Some graphics (the hash table, some of the sorting) are utterly confusing unless you already know exactly what's going on.

Other chapters are really well done (mazes), and many of the graphics explain tricky concepts very well (musical influences). The illustrations are fun and quirky throughout, and the approach of showing just a couple of approaches is highly effective.

My hope with both of Almossawi's books was to be able to hand them to my 13 and 16 year old children and say, "Read this! It explains important concepts in approachable ways!" In both cases, I'm hesitant to give that recommendation. Perhaps a 2nd Edition of each will come along that addresses these issues. In any case, for Almossawi's THIRD book I hope he has a teenager work as an editor to ensure that the concepts are being covered in ways that people completely new to the concepts will engage with them. Whatever that third book is about, I plan to buy a copy.

An excellent introduction to many of the key ideas in computer science

The book presents various important topics from computer science through the lens of (albeit sometimes somewhat contrived) real-world problems. This book will not make the reader an expert in algorithms or teach them how to actually implement any particular algorithm in computer code, but it does elucidate the thought process behind solving some complex problems in a novice-friendly way. I especially like the emphasis the author puts on studying the performance of solutions as a function of input size - this is a concept that often evades newcomers but it is laid out very clearly along with excellent illustrations in this book. I strongly recommend this book for an interested amateur or for any student taking a beginning course in computer science that wants some supplementary exposure to many of the key ideas in the subject. I am planning on using this book as a required supplementary reading material for my AP Computer Science Principles class next year, several of the chapters fit perfectly along with the curriculum for that course.

I read this story, and I had to re-read. The imagery and the way the scenes are described are beautiful and very erotic. I was drawn in from the start! The way the author shows their bodies and how they interact together is just amazing. Their passion is almost feral. The dream at the beginning, how Blaine crawled onto bed, his lover waiting...I'm speechless. The author's use of words is perfect. I can't get over how hot this fantasy is. An instant favorite!

The Imaginative world of Deltora

The phenomenal adventure of the Deltora Quest Series continues in the second book the Lake of Tears. Emily Rodda brings to life the world of Deltora in her series and makes you care for the characters as if you were receiving personal letters of their adventures.
My review for the first book I complained about how the progression of the story was too fast for my taste. However, after reading the second book I now realize that the first book Rodda just had to cram in some background in the first part before moving on to the actual Quest. Now in the second book everything flows smoothly from moment to moment guiding the reader along side the three unlikely hero’s as they encounter pitfalls and injury until they finally achieve their goal.
Roddas’ writing style keeps me interested throughout the novelette. Each chapter is short enough that I hardly notice when I finish one and just continuing plowing forward into the story, I am so enraptured in the lives of the characters. Roddas’ descriptors are also what keeps me reading, because through her imagery the world of Deltora truly comes to life in my imagination. There is not a moment when I am unsure of what I am seeing because she describes every moment in such detail that nothing should be missing.
The characters of The Lake of Tears are also fantastically developed. In the first book we just got a little peak into their minds but as they continue on in this story we begin to see more about them. We see how Jasmine, though she has been deprived of normal societal things, is very smart and quick witted, willing to sacrifice herself for the cause. Barda, though at first seems rough and tumble actually cares for his companions. Leif is developing new skills and becoming more accustomed to his leadership position as they travel. The other characters that they encounter along the way are also very lovable and easy to picture as fully flushed out people or monsters. Though this is a short tale Rodda did not spare anything when it came to making her characters come to life.
My only problem that I found with the tale was that it was somewhat predictable. At moments I was quite capable of guessing what was about to happen. Of course I already know that they will likely succeed by the end of the tale and move on to get the next stone. That is not what is too predictable. It is the progression up to that, I was able to guess what encounters they would have and how they would occur. Most of all I was able to predict the magical ending after the got the stone that they would succeed in doing more then placing more power into the belt.
Over all, I am very impressed with the Deltora Quest because Rodda is capable of making this entire world within just a few pages. It truly shows the skill of the writer when they are able to create something so powerful within a short story. I did once imagine this tale being better if it was longer. However, as I read further into the story I can’t imagine it any other way because it is already so powerful just within the novelette it is.

The quest continues on a journey to the Lake of Tears.

This exciting, epic new fantasy series continued with this wonderful book. I can't wait to read the third book, which takes Lief, Jasmine, and Barda to the horrifying City of the Rats. Emily Rodda has created a magical, harshly beautiful world as a setting for this series.

The Journey Continues

The three continued to the dangerous Lake of Tears, in the land ruled by the evil sorceress Thaegan. They need to get through her territory and to the Lake of Tears. On their way, they discover a troop of Grey Guards with a prisoner; a tiny Ralad builder named Manus. They rescue him, and move off the road to avoid capture by the angry Grey Guards. Then they see a broken sign: Ring and Enter. They see a nice cottage, and a bell. They oblige, and run to the cottage. But instead of a nice, flat lawn, is quicksand. The two inhabitants, Nij and Doj, pull them out and treat them well. But they do not speak English. Instead, they say things like "Noos taem hserf!" Which later, they discover is "Fresh meat soon!" and their names are Jin and Jod - Two of Thaegan's evil children. Can they make it to the Lake of Tears? They do, and find a beast, Soldeen. They have to get the gem from Soldeen, and when Kree, Jasmine's crow, kills Thaegan by trying to protect Jasmine, all of her evil work comes undone, including the trasfomation of the city D'Or.
