About the Author
Deborah Turbeville, a fashion editor turned photographer, was a fashion editor for Mademoiselle in 1966. A portfolio of some very stylized photographs she did for Saks Fifth Avenue was her first big breakthrough into the fashion photography world. Subsequently, her work first appeared in Vogue in the 1970s. Since then she has been a dominant figure in contemporary photography. Turbeville has authored many books, including Unseen Versailles, Wallflower, Studio St. Petersburg, Past Imperfect 1978-1997, and Casa No Name. Her work continues to be exhibited around the world and is published regularly in many international magazines.�

I am a big fan of Deborah Turbeville's work and this book was fabulous. I love the feel/mood of the images and I am happy to have this book as part of my photography library. I also have her "Past Imperfect" book too. I think this one is better, though I love them both. Found the book to be very inspirational. Lots of ideas for shooting I would like to do.

But Lenny has noticed that his grandpa is beginning to change from his once proud, kind, and stately self to a tired, forgetful, and sometimes not-so-kind fellow. Lenny gains understanding with a little help from Hippo, who explains that as King Lion gets old, "bits of him are wearing out" and that his brain isn't working quite as well as it did and so he forgets things. Lenny's marble collection, a gift from Grandpa, lets King Lion recall some enjoyable experiences from his youth. Aging, however, is inevitable, as is growing up. Later, when Lenny becomes king, with his own son, he always remembers his grandfather. And he reminds the young animals "to be kind to their grandpas and grandmas, and to help them remember." Though purposeful, the gentle telling bypasses explicit death and the harsher parts of dealing with aging. Images, rendered by the illustrator of Badger's Parting Gift (HarperCollins, 1984), of the animal kingdom are equally gentle. About the Author
Schoolteacher and journalist JULIA JARMAN has written over 80 books for children. She lives near Bedford and has three grown-up children. She now devotes a lot of time to school and library visits.

This is a poignant, but excellent tale for young children whose grandparents are experiencing dementia ...

Lenny watched as his grandpa, King Lion, scratched his head while he looked at the Snakes and Ladders game. Oh, my goodness! Something was terribly wrong. Grandpa didn’t even know which way was up, which way was down, and he “couldn’t remember Lenny’s name.” The once handsome, strong, and kingly looking King Lion even looked different. He sat in his rocking chair looking out of sorts and even his mane looked kind of scraggly. Lenny stood in front of him tossing a soccer ball up and down. *Hint, hint,* but grandpa wasn’t interested. “What’s that,” he asked. Something was really, truly, seriously wrong with King Lion.

It grew even more confusing with time. One of the strangest things was that “grandpa’s crown [was] in the trash bin with some other things that shouldn’t have been there.” Lenny’s face grew worried when he saw not only that crown in the trash, but also his candy, a pencil, and a comb. King Lion was all nestled in his bed, but it wasn’t bedtime. Something was really, truly, seriously wrong with King Lion. Grandma tried to reassure Lenny, and explained “Don’t worry, Lenny. I’ll play with you. Grandpa’s not himself today.” Just what was wrong with grandpa King Lion? Was there anything Lenny could do to help him?

This is a poignant, but excellent tale for young children whose grandparents are experiencing dementia. Of course there are many forms of dementia, but young children like Lenny only know that their grandparents are not quite right. Lenny remembers a lively, vivacious King Lion, not the grandpa that is confused and a bit mean at times. This is certainly a wonderful book that will help young children understand what’s happening as they journey with Lenny and King Lion. Lenny does learn how to help grandpa King Lion, something that may work for others. The artwork is beautiful and meshes well with the tale. This is an excellent read and discuss tale for anyone who has a family member in the throes of dementia.

I have been studying the Hermetic principles and the law of attraction for many years now and Love this little book I spent eight hundred bucks on books on amazon last year and this is my first book review. Wonderful job you have taken the Master Key, Kyablion and other great works and put them into a simple easy to read book. Hats off to you sir the only thing I don't like is the fact that you wrote the same book I was attempting to write LOL Back to the drawing board.

The real deal

Justin, you did a great job for your first book! Congratulations! I loved it. It was on point, to the "t", just as I expected it to be. I follow you on YouTube and listen to almost everyone of your podcast, videos, interviews etc. I now know and truly believe that life is what you make it. This book supports my belief way before I even knew what the law and attraction was. It's a easy read. Not long at all. I definitely would like a audio version of this book so I can listen to at my convenience so that way I can lock in all this good stuff in my subconscious. Thanks again. Happy fan!

Great thoughts, needs editing.

I liked the book. The bullet point presentation was a little weird at first but by the end of the book I liked it. Each little idea a cubbyhole unto itself but all working together. I was able to pick and choose the ones that resonated most with me and highlight them for later reading on my notes to solidify what I already learned. The reason I gave four stars instead of five was there are quite a few grammatical/spelling errors in here and it made the read difficult at times because it would stop me in my tracks. It's not too hard to figure out what was meant to be said but taking the time to do so distracts from the reading.

This incredibly insightful work chronicles the life of a psychologist and professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University who suffers from manic depression. Jamison began experiencing mood swings during adolescence but, despite her education and training, did not seek help until she had completed her doctorate and began teaching at UCLA. Like so many others suffering from manic depression, she felt initially that the depressions were only passing phases she'd have to work out herself. She experienced the manic phases as great periods of creativity and accomplishment and feared they would be deadened by using medication. (In an earlier book, Touched with Fire, LJ 2/15/93, Jamison explored the relationship between manic depression and creativity.) Jamison finally comes to grips with her illness and recognizes the importance of medication used in conjunction with psychotherapy. This combination of treatment controls her illness and has enabled her to succeed. Her story and writing style are both inspirational and educational. Highly recommended for all libraries.

This is an alright book. I bought it after a few years of thinking that I probably have bipolar disorder. Kay Redfield Jamison's writing is clear, accurate and interesting, though I would not call it beautiful. The book was great about breaking down the specifics of the illness and after finishing I felt I had a better understanding of the illness, felt positive that I was bipolar, and ultimately felt I had a better understanding of why I feel certain ways at certain times.
My beef with the book is that she doesn't acknowledge how exceptional her access to resources is. Like when she talks about running up her bills too high (I also have this problem) she just has her brother loan her the money to fix it. When she feels really sick, she has the best psychologist/psychiatrists watching her round the clock. It really doesn't work like that for most people. I am a 22 year-old boy supporting myself totally in NYC. I am broke, have no health insurence and no family members who will financially support me. I'll be lucky to afford seeing a shrink and paying for my medication, while she, on the other hand, had people calling her, watching her, making sure she wouldn't cause herself harm. It almost seems at parts of the book as if treatment sought her, instead of the other way around. if only i should be so lucky. I find it funny that she doesn't bring up how different another patients struggle might be without the priviledges she's had. So, it was kind of frustrating.

No More "Fear of the Fear of Flying"

I had my first and only manic episode at the age of forty-four, four years ago. In order to be diagnosed a manic-depressive (also know as "bi polar"), you have to have also an expisode of the opposite disorder. In my case, a brief period of depression preceded the mania.
When I went manic, I was brought to a hospital, nearly kicking and screaming. I didn't believe I had this disorder. If you are a family member of a manic-depressive, please understand that they are not capable of behaving normally when they are having an episode.
I didn't have to stay away from home too long because I was caught in a very early stage. I was lucky. This illness can devastate people's lives. Some of us must face it and fight it on a daily basis. When I got out of the psychiatric hospital and initally met the "psychopharmarcologial"* shrink who is my doctor now, he said to me at my first visit: "I would like you to read AN UNQUIET MIND, by Kay Jamison. She is a research scientist who is also a manic-depressive."
So I did. And, do you know what? It helped me to feel comforted. I no longer felt alone. I no longer felt quite so nervous about "trusting my brain", which had never let me down before.
I don't feel as guilty for the foolish things I did while manic, nor I do feel as embarrassed. The shame can be haunting for some people. This book helps dispel that. Dr. Jamison is very honest about all the foolish and self destructive things she did. Because I read this book, I understand that I have a neurological disorder that up until recently was very poorly understood. Because of reading this book, I realize that it takes stalwart dedication and, in my case, a love of my family to maintain myself on the road to good health. Otherwise, sure, I would be tempted to "fly" again, just as Kay Jamison did. Her honesty about the damage she did to herself and to her relationships, and her willingness to be open about the seductive nature of this disease has helped me remain on the path to good health.
Read this book and dispel some of your confusion about this not so uncommon, not all that glamorous disorder. And then go hug your family, or your s.o.-- or yourself. Hang tough and don't be afraid. Best wishes, Jean

Rabagliati line seems to get better in each of his graphic novels. In this one he pays homage to the masters of the French and Belgian masters of the clear line with many references. The story follows Paul back to his teenage years, growing up in the 70s with the background of a convulse French Canada. The detail to the secondary characters and not indulging in nostalgia make this a great book, one of the best of the Paul books and that's a lot to say

Heartfelt, smart, gut punch ending, gorgeous as usual with important ideas well articulated about coming of age but also politics, identity, self awareness, personal responsibility, and family. Really well done.

The ordinary and everyday can be more interesting than you thought

I've read a couple of the author's earlier slice-of-life graphic novels about Paul which were written about a decade ago -- but they were set in the late `70s and early `80s, when the protagonist was an adult trying to make his way in the art world. This one takes place when Paul is about eleven, so the author seems to moving backward. Or something.

The setting is Montreal during the time when the FLQ was shifting from protests into terrorism, but Paul is concerned only with trying to learn to draw comics, trying to learn to play guitar, and trying to learn about girls (especially Helene, who appears to be pursuing him, and with him he shares their mutual first kiss). Paul has an older sister (the sarcastic bane of his life) and a number of friends but he's largely a loner. Then he discovers the Cub Scout Pack at the local church (you had to be Catholic to be a Cub in Quebec in those days) and jumps in with both feet, taking part in the sing-alongs and the games, learning to be alone in the woods at night during Winter Camp, and generally having a whole lot of fun. The three scoutmasters (one of them apparently a priest) are nicely done, too, with their own concerns when the kids aren't around -- especially Daniel, younger than the others and an avid photographer, whose own political connections become suspect when the government cracks down on the separatists.

That's pretty much the plot, just mostly ordinary everyday events and their effect on completely believable everyday people. Until the ending. Which comes shockingly out of left field and will leave you slightly stunned. This series has won the author/artist a number of awards, all of them fully justified.
