Edith Nesbit (1858&ndash1924) was a children's writer whose most famous novels include The Story of the Treasure Seekers, Five Children and It, and The Enchanted Castle.

I wish Oswald were real, I honestly do. He's the greatest, so utterly pompous yet compassionate and humane, so three-dimensional, so all-knowing, yet so childishly naive. The Wouldbegoods is hilarious and quite informative. I learned a great deal about British vocabulary--"ripping" is now my most-loved word.

Maybe They Should Try Being Bad.....?

"I do believe we are the worst children who ever lived!" Alice Bastable cries when yet another plan of the 'Wouldbegoods' goes disastrously wrong. Her despair is understandable, in their attempts to perform good deeds the six Bastable children and their two friends wreck havoc across the British countryside. Yet in the end they do manage to do good, quite by accident. Absolutely hilarious.

Banished for the Summer!

6 Bastables and two friends are sent to the country for the summer, and try to do good things. Of course, the best laid plans...But what child can resist a story of children living in a moat house, spending their summer free to explore the English countryside? What great ideas will the children come up with next? The characters are funny and very real. There is trouble around every bend, but a theme of honesty and integrity runs through the story like a breath of fresh country air.

An Amazon Best Book of April 2017: It’s interesting that the dust jacket for The Road to Jonestown, Jeff Guinn’s biography Jim Jones, features a photograph of the infamous preacher without his signature, nearly ubiquitous sunglasses. Despite the scale of the Jonestown tragedy – where more than 900 people died, willingly or not, on November 18, 1978 – the man behind the shades and his motivations have remained mysterious, in part because the event is simply hard to look at and difficult to comprehend. Longtime journalist Jeff Guinn, however, doesn’t mind an occasional walk on the wild side. In the same way that his 2013 biography of Charles Manson dug deep to uncover the pivotal moments of the psychopath’s past (it features a boyish, smiling proto-cult-mastermind on its own jacket), Guinn unmasks Jones through interviews with the people who themselves knew him, from townspeople to his parishioners to his the reverend’s own family. The result is a dense read and full of detail, but none superfluous. I read all night!

I was 16 when it happened, and remember reading a book about the tragedy several years later. That decades-old book didn't compare to the detail, depth, and insight of The Road to Jonestown.
I won't go into the details of the story, as there are other synopses here.
The lesson then, and it certainly applies today: when you listen only to one point of view, and surround yourself only with people who agree with you, you lose the ability to think for yourself. And the echo chamber becomes a trap. Whether it's religion, or politics, it's never a good idea.

GREAT Read!

The medievael dialogue in this text really makes it, from an aspiring codicologist and manuscript science perspective. Incredibly well-researched and comprehensive discourse on the historical foundations and context for why we read and impose certain genderedness within modern visual information, from fine art to contemporary iconography to secular, everyday communication. Fantastic read; I highly recommend this text!

Interesting! (up to a point)

I have been reading Classen out of academic interest. Mostly because her books deal with areas very few other people seem to touch. I can highly recommend 'Worlds of sense' and `Aroma'. Very, very good books about things you've never thought of.

Color of Angels also is one such book. It deals with 'worldviews' on perceptions of the divine. Especially the first half is very readable, highly enjoyable and refreshing. However, at a certain moment I happened to be sitting in Cambridge, on the shores of the Cam, thinking: Yeah, this is all nice and interesting, but so what? In other words, at a certain moment the book lost its fascination. For me that point was the mediaeval details, however interesting, yet less stimulating.

Please understand me well. This is not a bad book. I think for those interested in the topic it might be an exceptionally well crafted, highly readable, well constructed and substantiated book. For me it was a very enjoyable distraction. Up to a point.

Great quaility fun!!!!

I got this for Christmas.... It has very useful tips and tricks,and the pages that you draw in are amazing!!!! I could never get the proportions right, so this helps a lot for anyone who is beginning, or just wants to have some fun:)The only complaint I have is that the pencils that it comes with are really bad quality, If you want really nice pigment then go out to a craft store and buy better ones.

It is an amazing idea and it is not just good for designing clothes and outfits, but I saw a big improvement in her drawings of people after buying her the book. When i first saw this, I thought it must be a rip off because it's so cheap, but it arived in perfect condition and even came a day early! A Non-fiction page turner

Brother Guy Conssolmagno has exceeded his presentation of the synthesis of religion and science he began in Brother AstronomerBrother Astronomer: Adventures of a Vatican Scientist. In his presentation of believing in God and religion Consolmagno claims to be taking a techie point of view. He defines a techie as someone whose world view pragmatic, logical and functional. Techies want to know how things work. It is this attitude that gives them an understanding of God as "all modern science developed precisely because the medievals believed in a creator God,and thus they had the confidence to assume that this apparently chaotic universe did make sense (and was worthy of study)." On the matter of religion, he likens it to the scientific community which through peer review of experimental results leads to a better understanding of the world. His chapters specifically directed to his Roman Catholic religion (he is a Jesuit) apply to almost any main stream catholic, orthodox or protestant organization because it deals with his humanity and how that requires him to deal with other humans, God, and his creation. Consolmagno raises points of disagreement, but explains his position in a clear enough manner that you can argue with him, which makes the book fun as well as enlightening. His easy to read style and clear presentation of ideas make this book a page turner even if it is non-fiction.

Wondeful reading

This book is a great addition to an increasingly number of books written by respected scientists/engineers about why and how belief in God makes sense. Francis Collins' "Language of God" falls into the "why" cathegory. If you wanna challenge your Dawkins-minded friends, that's probably your best guide. Now, if you want to have a deep look about how a techie, Brother Consolmagno, makes sense of being a Roman Catholic, then this is definitely your book. In that sense, "God's Mechanics" is a very different book from "Language of God". Consolmagno isn't trying to be an apologetic of Christianity but rather he unapologetically gives you his reasons why he is a Roman Catholic. The way he writes, and jokes, is likely to resonate more with techies/geeks than with fundamental religious types but that's what he intended in the first place. Enjoy the read!

Here, Mayo, professor in the School of Architecture and Urban Design at the Univ. of Kansas and author of The American Grocery Store, traces their history from the dining clubs of the early 1800s, through the city clubs, and then the blossoming of country clubs in the first decades of the 20th century. The rise of the American country club coincided with suburbanization, new methods of transportation and the desire of the elite to separate themselves from the lower classes. But Mayo goes beyond social and economic history. For example, he includes philosophical debates about the country club as an exemplar of republican (little r) values: one magazine writer went so far as to say "[t]he country club seems almost destined to satisfy the somewhat communistic dream" of such utopian experiments as Brook Farm. Mayo (architecture and urban planning, Univ. of Kansas) writes a thoughtful history of the country club in a style similar to his earlier The American Grocery Store (Greenwood, 1993). Using sources that include histories of individual clubs, he first writes of the clubs' origins, starting with exclusive clubs that were established in the cities by men of the elite during the early 19th century. The rules of these clubs provided the guidelines for their successors, the country clubs. The popularity of outdoor activities made the clubs desirable, while improvements in transportation allowed the elite to move to the suburbs and enjoy them. Mayo writes about the impact of golf on the clubs and how clubs managed to survive during the lean years of the Great Depression. Finally, he describes the various architectural styles of country clubs, the development of a club management profession, and the use of country clubs by real estate developers. This well-written overview brings together a variety of factors in the history of country club development. Wonderful humor

Embroideries is a wonderfully funny graphic novel detailing the romantic lives of women in Iran. Each woman's story spans just a few pages, but touching, amusing punchlines are delivered every time. The illustrations are lively and gestural, capturing the personalities of Marjane's family and friends. The book is very relatable. It would be a good discussion starter for a book club or a parent broaching the subject of love, romance and courtship to young women.

One of the more amusing stories is told by a woman who, after noticing that her middle aged husband was being distracted from her middle age self by twenty-something women, had plastic surgery that took fat from her behind and used it to perk up her breasts. He loves her new breasts - but in fact is kissing her rear!

I love this book. It is hillarious, just like Persepolis and well drawn and written as always. The only downfall is the length... it's too short and probably a better choice to get it from the library.

Funny, heart breaking, insightful look at women in Iran, but could be women anywhere. The author is very good at getting precise meaning and acute issues across with just the right words. My new favorite author.

Ann is a director of her own company, Ann Gravells Ltd, an educational consultancy based in East Yorkshire. She specialises in teaching, training and quality assurance for the Further Education and Skills Sector.

Ann creates resources for teachers and learners such as PowerPoints and handouts for the TAQA units and for�the Award and the Certificate�in Education and Training. These are available via her resource website: www.anngravells.co.uk/resources.

Ann is a consultant to the University of Cambridge’s Institute of Continuing Education. She has worked for several awarding organisations producing qualification guidance, policies and procedures, and carrying out quality assurance of teacher training qualifications. She has been teaching in further education colleges since 1983.

Ann holds a Masters in Educational Management, a PGCE, a Degree in Education, and a Medal of Excellence for teaching. Ann is a Fellow of the Institute for Learning and holds QTLS status.
