Theory of Spectrochemical Excitation, by Paul W. Boumans

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy. Hamlet There exists a fairly large number of textbooks concerned with spectrochemical analysis. Most of them deal with practical applications and instrumental factors, and provide the reader with the knowledge indispensable for conducting analyses with the help of emission spectra. Practical knowledge and experience are indeed important requisites for success fully exploiting the spectrochemical method in the field of analytical chemistry. As the method is essentially empirical, it is, in principle, a simple one, provided that we succeed in exciting all samples in an identical manner; for then, relative intensities of spectral lines can serve as the 'weights' by which to measure amounts of elements. However, creating the required constancy of excitation conditions is hampered by the very nature of the sample, whose composition profoundly influences the excitation characteristics of the light source. Therefore, spectrochemists are inevitably engaged in all the processes that determine the radiation output of the light source for a given sample. Dealing, with this ensemble of processes, that is, with 'excitation' in the widest sense, is the object of this book (cf. 1. 1). The reader will seek in vain for enumerations of practical rules that would tell him how to tackle a particular analysis problem.

From Publishers Weekly
Told in a lyrical, fairy tale - like style, Ryan's (riding Freedom) robust novel set in 1930 captures a Mexican girl's fall from riches, her immigration to California and her growing awareness of class and ethnic tensions. Thirteen-year-old Esperanza Ortega and her family are part of Mexico's wealthy, land-owning class in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Her father is a generous and well-loved man who gives his servants land and housing. Early in the novel, bandits kill Esperanza's father, and her corrupt uncles threaten to usurp their home. Their servants help her and her mother flee to the United States, but they must leave Esperanza's beloved Abuelita (grandmother) behind until they can send for her. Ryan poetically conveys Esperanza's ties to the land by crafting her story to the rhythms of the seasons. Each chapter's title takes its name from the fruits Esperanza and her countrymen harvest, firs in Aguascalientes, then in California's San Joaquin Valley. Ryan fluidly juxtaposes world events (Mexico's post-revolution tensions, the arrival of Oklahoma's Dust Bowl victims and the struggles between the U.S. government and Mexican workers trying to organize) with one family's will to survive - while introducing readers to Spanish words and Mexican customs. Readers will be swept up by vivid descriptions of California dust storms or by the police crackdown on a labor strike ("The picket signs lay on the ground, discarded, and like a mass of marbles that had already been hit, the strikers scattered?"). Ryan delivers subtle metaphors via Abuelita's pearl's of wisdom, and not until story's end will readers recognize how carefully they have been strung. Ages 9-14. (Oct.)

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9-Ryan uses the experiences of her own Mexican grandmother as the basis for this compelling story of immigration and assimilation, not only to a new country but also into a different social class. Esperanza's expectation that her 13th birthday will be celebrated with all the material pleasures and folk elements of her previous years is shattered when her father is murdered by bandits. His powerful stepbrothers then hold her mother as a social and economic hostage, wanting to force her remarriage to one of them, and go so far as to burn down the family home. Esperanza's mother then decides to join the cook and gardener and their son as they move to the United States and work in California's agricultural industry. They embark on a new way of life, away from the uncles, and Esperanza unwillingly enters a world where she is no longer a princess but a worker. Set against the multiethnic, labor-organizing era of the Depression, the story of Esperanza remaking herself is satisfyingly complete, including dire illness and a difficult romance. Except for the evil uncles, all of the characters are rounded, their motives genuine, with class issues honestly portrayed. Easy to booktalk, useful in classroom discussions, and accessible as pleasure reading, this well-written novel belongs in all collections.

From Booklist
Gr. 5-8. Moving from a Mexican ranch to the company labor camps of California, Ryan's lyrical novel manages the contradictory: a story of migration and movement deeply rooted in the earth. When 14-year-old Esperanza's father is killed, she and her mother must emigrate to the U.S., where a family of former ranch workers has helped them find jobs in the agricultural labor camps. Coming from such privilege, Esperanza is ill prepared for the hard work and difficult conditions she now faces. She quickly learns household chores, though, and when her mother falls ill, she works packing produce until she makes enough money to bring her beloved abuelita to the U.S.. Set during the Great Depression, the story weaves cultural, economic, and political unrest into Esperanza's poignant tale of growing up: she witnesses strikes, government sweeps, and deep injustice while finding strength and love in her family and romance with a childhood friend. The symbolism is heavy-handed, as when Esperanza ominously pricks her finger on a rose thorne just before her father is killed. But Ryan writes movingly in clear, poetic language that children will sink into, and the books offers excellent opportunities for discussion and curriculum support. Gillian Engberg

the other young girls mock her for not knowing how to do simple everyday tasks like sweeping or doing laundry
By Alicia Rene Savoir
Esperanza is a privileged wealthy girl from Aguascalientes, Mexico. After her father is killed just before her birthday, her corrupt uncles make living in her home difficult. After “proposing” to Esperanza’s mother, Ramona, and being immediately shot down, the uncle somehow has the house set on fire in the middle of the night. The mother is no longer financially capable of rebuilding and is left two options, marry her deceased husband’s brother, or flee to the States and try to survive with her daughter. Ramona cannot bear the thought of marrying her corrupt brother-in-law and escapes to the States with her former house servants and Esperanza. From the fire, their beloved Abuelita, Esperanza’s grandmother, is forced to stay behind until she is well and can join them. When they make it to the States, Esperanza struggles to adjust to her new life, the other young girls mock her for not knowing how to do simple everyday tasks like sweeping or doing laundry. In her world everyone did these things for her; her only job was to be a child. She struggled with caring for the babies while her mother left for the day and went to work, but eventually somewhat adjusted. After a sudden dust tornado, her mother falls ill and is unable to work. This is the motivation that drives Esperanza to change her spoiled ways and start to work in the place of her mother. For months Esperanza saves money in the hopes to reunite her Abuelita and her mother. For months Esperanza’s mother showed no signs of recovery, eventually got pneumonia and was no longer allowed visitors. On top of being thrown into this new world the threat of an uprising amongst the workers threatened Esperanza’s hopes of saving enough to continue to help her mother and Abuelita. After all her hard work she discovers that her mother is well again and free to come home, but is still very depressed from the recent events in her life. In hopes to pull her out of depression she tells her mother about the money she’d been saving, only to find it gone. Miguel, her childhood friend and at times her bully of sorts, had stolen her money and gone to Northern California. After a few weeks, Miguel returns and surprises everyone with Abuelita. This is exactly what Esperanza had been hoping for and it healed her mother and they were all together again.
Esperanza Rising, by Pam Muoz Ryan is a fantastic read for an intro high school Spanish class. As a Foreign Language Education Major, with the hopes of becoming a high school Spanish teacher, this book is a perfect avenue with which to learn about Mexican culture. It has many Mexican themes while incorporating some Spanish words, directly translated after in English. There are so many adult themes that many teenage students are unaware of that are incorporated into the book. The way the themes are presented is very accommodating to helping the students understand the content, without being overwhelmed. The story is written from the view of a young girl, Esperanza, and her life from living in Mexico to escaping to the United States. The author does well to tear down and the common stereotype that Mexicans are “dirty” and “under-educated” and instead tells about the hardships that many Mexican immigrants faced and still face when coming to the United States where their skills and education does not matter to the American landowners that they work for. This theme can be controversial, but is one that should be discussed and amended, which would be an excellent way to generate an open class discussion. The section of the book that describes Esperanza’s uncles and their power over the town and how they take advantage of their power for corrupt purposes can easily be related to any time period, not solely the 1930s in Mexico. The book is also written for a younger audience so it is a very quick and easy read which helps the students feel less overwhelmed and hopefully halts any chance of anyone falling behind. The setup of the book is also very conducive to a classroom setting, as it can be broken up into different sections that can be distributed however the teacher wishes. Overall, it is a great read for any class, but especially for a Spanish class studying Mexican culture.

Finding Hope and Happiness
By swolfe
Esperanza Rising, written by Pam Muoz Ryan, is a story of love, loss, and hope, set in Mexico during the 1930’s, just after the Mexican Revolution. Esperanza – the main character – is a young girl living on her family’s well-established vineyard in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Compared to those around them, Esperanza and her family live a very wealthy and lavish lifestyle, full of finer things. Raised by her loving parents, Ramona and Sixto Ortega, Abuelita (her grandmother), and long-time servants Hortensia and Alfonso, Eperanza has grown accustomed to her life with parties, her lovely dresses, dolls, and everyone treating her like the princess she believes she is. However, everything Esperanza has ever known comes crashing down around her when bandits attack and kill her father on the eve of her 13th birthday.
Now, Esperanza, her mother Ramona, and Abuelita had a dilemma and a tough decision to make. Since her father – the head of the household – was no longer living and able to take care of them, Esperanza’s mother could not take his place, so they only had two options; Ramona could choose to stay and marry her husband’s evil, money-hungry brother, or they could take a risk, and go with Hortensia, Alfonso, and their son Miguel to America, the land of opportunity. In hopes to give themselves a better life than what they would have if they stayed in Mexico, Esperanza and her mother make the long and dangerous journey to America with their friends, leaving behind Abuelita because she was too weak. They promised each other that they would be reunited again soon.
Coming to America is a major change from what Esperanza and her mother are used to, and it proves to be especially hard on Esperanza. Now she is an equal to the servants she once had, working long hours with little pay. When her mother suddenly becomes ill with a life-threatening disease, Esperanza shows everyone the woman she is becoming, working hard despite her frustrations and challenges. She holds onto hope (the meaning of her name), saving up enough money to bring Abuelita home and to pay her mother’s steadily rising medical bills. With the story being set in the Depression era, this is not an easy task, especially for someone of Esperanza’s age. “He who falls today may rise tomorrow” is a Mexican proverb quoted at the beginning of the book, and its meaning rings true to the story of Esperanza. Esperanza Rising is the coming-of-age story of a girl who loses practically everything and everyone she loves, and just when she reaches her lowest point, she finds a way to rise again, overcome her obstacles, and find joy and happiness in her new home with the people she cares most about.
Pam Muoz Ryan writes the story from the perspective of Esperanza, and the book has a wise and poetic but still light style to it, almost as though the reader is right there maturing alongside Esperanza; Ryan’s writing draws the reader in well. The book also offers an insightful look inside the Hispanic culture, with references and translations throughout the book. In the “About the Author” section at the end of the book, Pam Muoz Ryan states that her grandmother especially influenced her writing, and that Esperanza Rising is based on her immigration story.
A Pura Belpr Award Winner, Esperanza Rising is a well-written story of kindness and determination that can be enjoyed by an audience of all ages. From the time it starts, it is hard to put down and you will never want it to end – a definite page-turner! I would highly recommend this book to anyone for pleasure or as an educational tool, as it offers a wonderful and thoughtful look inside a different culture and time period.

This book is based on a true story. My 5th grader was assigned to read this in class so I read along with him. What a wonderful story of perseverance, love, family and determination. She has many struggles while learning how to work for everything she needs. She also has an amazing support system in her family and friends. This book depicts life of an immigrant during the great depression in the fields of California.

Amazon.com Review
Book Description In this stunning collectors' edition of The Lightning Thief, Percy Jackson's world is brought to life with eight full-color plates by the series jacket artist John Rocco. The edition comes in an elegant slipcase with a ribbon bookmark, rough edges, and cloth cover--a perfect keepsake for fans of this truly epic series.

After getting expelled from yet another school for yet another clash with mythological monsters only he can see, twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is taken to Camp Half-Blood, where he finally learns the truth about his unique abilities: He is a demigod, half human, half immortal. Even more stunning: His father is the Greek god Poseidon, ruler of the sea, making Percy one of the most powerful demigods alive. There's little time to process this news. All too soon, a cryptic prophecy from the Oracle sends Percy on his first quest, a mission to the Underworld to prevent a war among the gods of Olympus.

This first installment of Rick Riordan's best-selling series is a non-stop thrill-ride and a classic of mythic proportions.

A Note for Amazon Customers from Illustrator John Rocco

Dear Readers,

When I was about eight years old I had the great luck of stumbling upon my father’s collection of Classics Illustrated comic books. I instantly fell in love with the stories of Robert Louis Stevenson, Mark Twain, H.G. Wells, and James Fenimore Cooper. Many years later, when I became interested in illustration, I discovered the beautiful hardbound editions of these stories featuring the arresting artwork of incredible artists like N.C. Wyeth, Howard Pyle, and Maxfield Parrish. What I love about their paintings is not just the beautiful draftsmanship, color and composition, but their ability to capture a moment that held the promise of swashbuckling adventure. That promise let me know that if I read the words surrounding that picture, I could unlock the adventure.

That promise is what I tried to achieve when creating the pictures for this incredible series. My approach has never been just to describe a scene from the book, but to create an illustration that offers tension and mystery--an image that provides just enough information to leave the viewer wanting to know more.

When I was asked to create images for the Deluxe Edition of Rick Riordan’s The Lightning Thief it was a dream come true. It was my chance to illustrate what I consider to be a new classic. The Lightning Thief has so many wonderful moments it was difficult to choose what to paint, but I knew I wanted to create a balance of dramatic scenes and quiet moments and to capture the spirit of Rick’s unforgettable characters. It has been my own great adventure to help bring this book to life in a new way, in color, on the page.

I hope you enjoy this Deluxe Edition of The Lightning Thief.

Yours,

John

Percy and a Nereid Percy and Annabelle on their way to Las Vegas Percy at the Entrance to Mount Olympus

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 5-9–An adventure-quest with a hip edge. At first glance, Perseus Jackson seems like a loser (readers meet him at a boarding school for troubled youth), but he's really the son of Poseidon and a mortal woman. As he discovers his heritage, he also loses that mother and falls into mortal danger. The gods (still very active in the 21st-century world) are about to go to war over a lost thunderbolt, so Percy and sidekicks Grover (a young satyr) and Annabeth (daughter of Athena) set out to retrieve it. Many close calls and monster-attacks later, they enter Hades's realm (via L.A.). A virtuoso description of the Underworld is matched by a later account of Olympus (hovering 600 floors above Manhattan). There's lots of zippy review of Greek myth and legend, and characters like Medusa, Procrustes, Charon, and the Eumenides get updates. Some of the Labors of Heracles or Odysseus's adventures are recycled, but nothing seems stale, and the breakneck pace keeps the action from being too predictable. Percy is an ADHD, wise-cracking, first-person narrator. Naturally, his real quest is for his own identity. Along the way, such topics as family, trust, war, the environment, dreams, and perceptions are raised. There is subtle social critique for sophisticated readers who can see it. Although the novel ends with a satisfying conclusion (and at least one surprise), it is clear that the story isn't over. The 12-year-old has matured and is ready for another quest, and the villain is at large. Readers will be eager to follow the young protagonist's next move.–Patricia D. Gr. 6-9. The escapades of the Greek gods and heroes get a fresh spin in the first book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, about a contemporary 12-year-old New Yorker who learns he's a demigod. Perseus, aka Percy Jackson, thinks he has big problems. His father left before he was born, he's been kicked out of six schools in six years, he's dyslexic, and he has ADHD. What a surprise when he finds out that that's only the tip of the iceberg: he vaporizes his pre-algebra teacher, learns his best friend is a satyr, and is almost killed by a minotaur before his mother manages to get him to the safety of Camp Half-Blood--where he discovers that Poseidon is his father. But that's a problem, too. Poseidon has been accused of stealing Zeus' lightning bolt, and unless Percy can return the bolt, humankind is doomed. Riordan's fast-paced adventure is fresh, dangerous, and funny. Percy is an appealing, but reluctant hero, the modernized gods are hilarious, and the parallels to Harry Potter are frequent and obvious. Because Riordan is faithful to the original myths, librarians should be prepared for a rush of readers wanting the classic stories. Chris Sherman

A teen adventure novel any age can appreciate.
By SA Mathman
I bought this book because it was on one of those $.99 lists and I thought, "What the heck." This book took me back 50 years to some of my first pre-teen adventure books, e.g. the Mars series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The book is written from the standpoint of the protagonist who is pretty much a current pre-teen (I have 2 and one teen) with a wry irreverent sense of humor, as have many of the characters, "We don't say the "c" word." It's not the "c" word you think. The book is fun and fast moving and if you have teen/pre-teens you will recognize a fair amount of their behavior while chuckling at them. The adults are also somewhat caricatures of the typical adult, but probably as many pre-teens see us.
It's fun. If you are an adult read it with your pre-teen, early teen as something to do together or in the car on a trip. You may surprise yourself that you have really enjoyed it.

Cure for Reluctant Readers!
By Dee Maynard
Rick Riordan has hit on a winning formula in the Percy Jackson series! Lots of adventure aimed directly at the 10-13 year old reluctant reader. The story line and characters are as addictive as Rowling's Harry Potter books, but instead of using wizardry and witchcraft, Riordan empowers his heroes and heroines through the magic of Greek mythology. Tons of monster-fighting, problem-solving, and even a bit of age-appropriate romance thrown in as the characters age along with the target audience. As a reader, a parent, and a middle-school English teacher, I cannot say enough good about Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief! At least a dozen parents have thanked me for introducing this story to their sons, who would not read a book until this one came along, and who have now read and re-read the entire series. I even know of some teenagers (both boys and girls) who had a race to see who could finish the latest book first! Not only are they entertained by these stories, but they are also learning about the root mythology of Western civilization while traveling to all the major landmarks of the U.S.A. (and, in the Heroes of Olympus series, across the Atlantic to Europe as well); when they get on to high school and have to study Homer's Odyssey and Iliad, they are making straight A's without effort! Last year I read the series aloud to my son, who has always been a struggling reader, and now he is re-reading it independently and loving it even more the second time around. DO NOT BE TURNED AWAY BY THE POOR MOVIE ADAPTATION!

I knew of the series because of the movies being released and being a big Harry Potter fan, similar genres. When my son and I finished the HP series we went looking for something else. The Percy series really hit the spot. No spoilers for the story, but the book also made my son curious about mythology.

The Fighting Staff, by Dwight C. McLemore

In the latest addition to his Fighting Weapons series, Dwight McLemore does for the staff what he did earlier for the Bowie, tomahawk, and sword. The Fighting Staff is a modern illustrated guide to using one of man's oldest weapons. In keeping with his philosophy on fighting weapons, in this workbook McLemore does not attempt to duplicate methods from a specific period in the past. Rather, he offers an eclectic approach that borrows the most effective techniques from Asian and European martial arts throughout history. The Fighting Staff covers such essentials as footwork, grip, strikes, thrusts, blocks, and targeting. But its real value lies in the fighting concepts imparted, which serve as a language for advanced training. As always, your martial arts training is greatly enhanced by McLemore's beautifully executed drawings that take you step-by-step through 25 fighting drills for the martial arts staff. His use of frontal, side and overhead views, as well as his unique "floating staff" perspective, allows you to truly see how your actions correlate with those of your training partner (or opponent), as well as how and where your weapon moves. The training techniques taught in this book are not limited to the staff. They can also be used effectively with other weapons.

One of the very best books ever written on the use of the Staff.
By Joseph J. Truncale
If you were going to design a college course on the use of the staff, this would be the book you would probably use. The author has written numerous books on the use of weapons such as the the Bowie and Big Knife Fighting, The Fighting Sword and the Fighting Tomahawk. Like all of his books, this one is full of large, clear illustrations to show each technique and tactic. He does not explain just one staff system but shows both the European and Asian staff fighting methods.

This fantastic work-book shows 25 fighting drills within its 18 detailed chapters. He explains the front, sides and rear of each technique with his great drawings.

In conclusion, if you are a serious martial artist or a student of the warrior arts, you will want to own this book. If you are a teacher of martial art weapons, this book is an excellent guide to the practical use of the staff.

Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Wakizashi Jujitsu Manual).

Excellent
By J. Alphin
If you are seeking to learn more about the use of the fighting staff, as a beginner or seasoned martial artist, this is the book to buy. McLemore covers both Western and Asian styles (he has trained in both for many years), combining the two for a solid foundation in both. This is the first book I have discovered that covers the evolution and martial use of the fighting staff from both East and West. McLemore also covers proper staff selection and both the history and technique behind making one's personal fighting staff.

I highly recommend this book.

The simplest of weapons can be the most effective
By Midwest Book Review
The simplest of weapons can be the most effective. "The Fighting Staff" discusses the principles behind the staff when used in combat. Not favoring any discipline in particular, Dwight C. McLemore hopes to give readers a wider grasping explanation on the many essentials one must know when dealing with the combat staff. With drills for training oneself and how to spar with it and the countless techniques, "The Fighting Staff" is a must for anyone who wants to better understand the details and skill that can lie beneath a simple stick.
